**Occupational Health & Safety Specialist**

Our Hantsport, Nova Scotia location is looking to hire an Occupational Health & Safety Specialist to provide occupational health & safety expertise to our Hantsport plant. This is a fantastic opportunity to join an amazing team where you will be an integral part of the operations team by ensuring compliance with applicable legislation and improving health and safety for the Hantsport facility. Reporting to the Corporate Occupational Health & Safety Manager, the Occupational Health & Safety Specialist will be responsible for the following key responsibilities:
- Identifying OHS and Environmental training requirements.
- Coordinating, developing, and facilitating required training.
- Maintaining training records.
- Supporting facility Joint Occupational Health, Safety and Security Committee including scheduling meetings, distributing minutes, and developing action plans.
- Purchasing and maintaining the inventory of facility safety equipment.
- Developing monthly safety talk information.
- Health and wellness: working with the Disability Case Manager, is responsible for the health and wellness programs.
- Assisting with and reviewing accident, injury, and incident reports.
- Acting as key contact for WCB and employees regarding completion of WCB forms and management of claims.
- Working with the Disability Case Manager to coordinate return-to-work plans for WCB and STD/LTD claims.
- Maintaining OHS related statistical databases for incident records, safety observations, and action plans.
- Working with Loss Control Management Steering Committee to develop and implement procedures, standards, and guidelines for safety and loss prevention.
- Ensuring any compliance issues with safety legislation are brought to the attention of Management.
- Coordinating activities related to the Ergonomics Program.
- Leading the Green Team at the facility.
- Reviewing each new chemical prior to entering the facility for safe procedures for storage, handling and use.
- Completing and/or coordinating inspections, reporting any findings, and recommending corrective actions.
- Ensuring safety SOP’s are maintained and new SOP’s are developed when needed.
- Coordinating fire drills and emergency evacuations and ensuring any necessary corrective actions take place.
- Investigating issues in relation to security.
- Developing and maintaining security protocols for the plant and property.
- Assuring compliance with C-TPAT.
- Supervising the Emergency Response Team activities.
- Ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.
- Coordination of ‘Zero Waste to Landfill’ initiative as part of the sustainability goals.
- Participating in Continuous Improvement (CI) initiatives as required.
**Qualifications**:
- Post secondary education and/or specific experience in a related position.
- Training and experience in emergency care.
- 5 years of safety experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Proven leadership abilities in health and safety.
- Some exposure to environmental regulations.
- Ability to understand appropriate priorities.
- Strong analytical skills.
- Ability to generate, maintain and respond to key performance indicators.
- Excellent verbal/written communication skills.
- Comfortable developing and presenting training materials.
- Ability to work effectively with other Health and Safety team members as well as the facility Operations group.
- Proficiency with MS Word, Excel and Power Point.
