Job Description Summary

The Network Analyst II designs solutions for existing complex information network systems including the assessment of facilities bandwidth requirements and system interdependencies.

The Network Analyst II is part of the NETwork and Infrastructure Services Team in UBC IT. This Team is responsible for supporting and growing the University’s large and complex Core Enterprise Data Network. UBC’s date network is highly virtualized and one of the largest in North America with multiple core hub sites, data centers, routers, DNS servers, firewalls, etc. UBC has over 100,000 hardwired data ports, 2,000 network switches, 700 IT Communication Rooms, 6 major IT Hub Sites, 500km of underground interlinking fiber optic data cabling, 10,000 wireless access points, 90,000 concurrent connected wireless devices, 2,000 Virtual Local Area Networks, and 1,100 campus Virtual Routers. All of this spans 400 academic buildings, multiple campus locations, BC Teaching Hospitals, and other satellite sites across the Province. The Network Analyst II will be responsible for Cisco-based Core Routing and Switching, DNS, Department and Border physical and virtual firewall services, network security, virtual routers, core network trouble shooting, etc. The position will have both project and operational responsibilities for UBC’s Enterprise Core network and will be expected to take on a high level or responsibility to support all aspects of the network.

Organizational Status

Works within the Network and Infrastructure Services as part of a team providing support for UBCNET. Reports to the Team Lead of the Network and Infrastructure Services under the UBCNETwork and Infrastructure Facilities unit. Works with other teams within UBC IT to support campus enterprise network services. Liaises with personnel from UBC IT, other campus IT units, IT units at other universities and institutions, the research community and other customers.

Work Performed

Specific Duties:
Ensure the operational stability of the campus network by providing support and implementation functions in the following networking areas: Routing and switching, Network Security; Wireless, Support Systems (DNS, DHCP), Network Management Systems, Service Provider (MPLS), QoS and Traffic Engineering (VOIP), Load Balancing, TCP/IP and packet capture and analysis, and Multicast.
- Participate in rotation duty which involves assigning tasks to other team members, coordinating trouble resolutions, and monitoring work flows.
- Provide after hours on-call support on a rotational basis.
- Participate in network design and lifecycle planning discussions.

Core Duties:

- Designs solutions for networking technology related failures and provides administrative support for network systems.
- Assesses facilities bandwidth requirements, system interdependencies, and network performance, and participates in capacity and function planning.
- Install, configure and maintain network components as well as any co-ordination efforts related to these activities
- Utilize existing toolsets to perform network installations, troubleshooting and documentation tasks
- Coordinates the installation and configuration of network components.
- Analyses user requirements and prepares detailed designs and equipment specifications.
- Participates in defining disaster recovery plans and the development of network test plans.
- Monitors network activity and connectivity, and troubleshoots, diagnoses and resolves network problems.
- Implements network security procedures and makes recommendations for improvement.
