- Working in the Indigenous Relations Office (IRO) Team and reporting to the Team Lead, the Indigenous Relations Consultant will support the advancement of Truth and Reconciliation as outlined in The City's Indigenous Policy and the White Goose Flying Report. This will involve the development and implementation of strategic approaches, plans and polices in collaboration with internal (Administration and Council) and Indigenous Peoples including Treaty 7 First Nations, the Metis Nation of Alberta and urban Indigenous Calgarians. Primary duties include:
- Collaborate with partners from within The City of Calgary, as well as with community-based Indigenous agencies, Indigenous Peoples and Nations in Calgary and surrounding area to develop policies and strategies that are mutually beneficial.
- Facilitate increased competencies in City staff by developing and delivering Indigenous awareness training based on research, including participatory action Indigenous research, while incorporating engagement and best practice learning techniques.
- Lead groups with diverse interests and agendas toward common outcomes, promoting positive change that benefit Indigenous peoples.
- Support various business units to implement the Indigenous Policy and Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action as outlined in the White Goose Flying Report.
- Write Council reports and respond to Council related queries and requests.
- Provide strategic guidance and support for the Calgary Urban Aboriginal Affairs Committee.
- Provide support for the overall functioning of the Indigenous Relations Office.
**Qualifications**
- Verifiable membership of an Indigenous Nation is required, with demonstrable lived experience.
- A Master's degree in Social Science or a related field and at least 4 years of related experience in Indigenous strategy and policy development, OR a Bachelor's degree with at least 8 years of related experience.
- Well-developed network of Indigenous Advisors and Elders.
- Prior experience in building community collaborations and partnerships, including development of Memorandums of Understanding or other partnership agreements.
- Intermediate proficiency using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
- Demonstrated strategic and analytical thinking, adaptability, political acumen and exceptional project management skills and report writing abilities.
- Success in this position requires strong communication, relationship building and group facilitation skills.
