**Job Summary**

Free Play for Kids is seeking enthusiastic, community-minded Welcome to Play Assistant Coaches to support programming for newcomer youth and families. This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy working with children, love sports and recreation, and can communicate in Kinyarwanda, Somali, Tigrinya, or any African language.

The Welcome to Play Assistant Coach will help create a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment where newcomer children and families can build confidence, make connections, and feel a sense of belonging through sport, movement, and play.

If you speak Kinyarwanda, Somali, Tigrinya, or any African language, enjoy working with kids, and are passionate about helping newcomer families feel at home, we’d love to hear from you.

**Education & Qualifications**
- Fluency in Kinyarwanda, Somali, Tigrinya, or any African language (spoken and written proficiency preferred)
- Previous coaching or youth recreation experience
- Interest in physical literacy, child development, and community-building
- Standard First Aid & CPR (or willing to obtain)
- Up-to-date Criminal Record Check & Vulnerable Sector Check required
- Experience working with newcomer or refugee youth and families is a strong asset
- Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle is a asset

**Key Responsibilities**
- Assist with setup, delivery, and supervision of games, drills, and group activities
- Help create a fun, safe, and inclusive space for children from diverse backgrounds
- Use language skills (Kinyarwanda, Somali, Tigrinya, or other African languages) to support communication with children and families, including basic translation and interpretation as needed
- Build positive relationships with newcomer families and act as a cultural bridge when appropriate
- Model positive behavior and leadership for children and peers
- Collaborate with other Assistant Coaches and Free Play staff
- Represent Free Play’s values and commitment to equity, inclusion, and reconciliation

**Position Conditions**
- This is a part-time paid position, approximately 10 - 15 hours per week
- Typical hours are Monday - Friday from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM
- Work takes place in recreation facilities across Edmonton
- Free Play for Kids respectfully operates on Treaty 6 territory, a traditional gathering place for diverse Indigenous peoples including the Cree, Blackfoot, Métis, Nakota Sioux, Iroquois, Dene, Ojibway/Saulteaux/Anishinaabe, Inuit, and many others whose histories, languages, and cultures continue to influence our community._

**Job Type**: Part-time

Pay: $18.00 per hour

Expected hours: 10 - 15 per week
