The History Department studies the past to prepare historically informed global citizens for the challenges of today and tomorrow. Our faculty and students produce historical knowledge and interpretations that reveal how and why the past matters.

We have several areas of research focus in history: Canadian, Digital, Environmental/ Science/Medicine, Gender/Women, Indigenous, International/Global, Public History, Social/Cultural, and War/Conflict. Several of our faculty have cross-appointments to other departments or programs.

In geographic terms, we teach undergraduate and graduate courses on Canada, the United States, Europe, East Asia, Middle East, and Africa. Our department supports an undergraduate program in International Relations, in conjunction with the Department of Political Science, and we run an undergraduate program in American Studies. Our graduate students earn a PhD in History or MA in History. The MA options include a 12-month program, and a Public History field.

**Responsibilities**:
The Research Assistant will be responsible for identifying and summarizing provincial and federal court cases that considered the meaning of the word 'Indian' within the context of the Indian Act (1876). The Research Assistant will further conduct a comprehensive literature review of relevant secondary sources that consider these cases or which otherwise consider the legal definition of an Indian per the meaning of the Indian Act. Additional tasks include preparing a spreadsheet summarizing Indian Band Council and Indian Agent records for Six Nations of the Grand River. The Research Assistant might be expected to travel to the Archives of Ontario for research purposes during their employment.

- Education:

- Undergraduate degree in History

**Experience**:

- Experience researching Indigenous and legal histories

Skills, Abilities & Expertise:

- Detail-oriented with an ability to function and process information with high levels of accuracy
- Ability to employ a systematic and efficient approach to work
- Personable and courteous in working relationships with colleagues, students and the public
- Ability to collect and analyze data in an objective manner
- Familiarity with regulations and guidelines governing research
- Familiarity with methods for research design, implementation, and analysis
- Familiarity with experimental design and analysis
- Computer skills with the ability to learn and use software programs
- Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite
- Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve department goals
- Verbal and written communication skills with the ability to document technical information
