Are you a talented writer/reporter who gets excited when you dig up and compose engaging news stories and features? Are you also comfortable handling breaking news, producing copy quickly, and able to adapt on-the-fly to the changing circumstances of the news day?
Then we need you
In this position, you will cover stories across many beats in and about the communities of Brantford, Ontario, Brant County, Six Nations of the Grand River and Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. You must be able to chase multiple stories at any given time because we want a journalist who will also seek out the stories which serve the citizens in our coverage area. You will report to the Editor & Chief Reporter but must be self-motivated and able to work on your own, have a passion and energy for local news, be creative and adept at hitting deadlines, all with a keen attention to detail.
This is a part-time position of approximately 15-20 hours per week, much of it on weekends. You will be asked to produce 6-8 stories per week.
This is primarily a remote position but you must have access to a car to attend events, as needed.
**Qualifications**
- Diploma or degree in journalism or in a related field, such as applied arts and/or communications - or possess other relevant experience.
- Strong writing skills and news judgment.
- Must have immediate access to a vehicle (with a valid driver’s license) as you will be expected to go to the coverage area for events and such.
- Excellent research capabilities and strong communication skills.
- Be active on social media and comfortable with multimedia reporting.
- Photography skills are an asset.
- Relevant experience or education regarding Indigenous and/or rural community issues is an asset.
**About Us**:
Brant Beacon produces fair and accurate local journalism for, with, and by, the people of Brantford, Brant County, Six Nations of the Grand River and Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation.
When we are all watching and engaged with our community and governments, social services and sports teams, local businesses and industry, our needs are addressed, democracy works better, and our community is strong
We value integrity, transparency, public trust, and quality over quantity. We aim for truth, depth, and context. Accuracy, thoroughness, thoughtfulness, and fairness come before speed and style. We want to foster informed, healthy discourse - and also have some fun doing it.
We believe journalism is a needed, necessary, public good. Brant Beacon exists to benefit the public by providing solid journalism and engaging our community.
Our community comes first.
