Basic Medical Sciences Undergraduate Education (BMSUE) is the centralized office that oversees the administration of the BMSc program across the seven basic medical sciences departments, the undergraduate program in Neuroscience (BSc), and other course offerings in the basic medical sciences. In addition, this unit is the home of the Interdisciplinary Medical Sciences (IMS) modules, which represent the largest group of students within the BMSc program. Led by the Associate Dean, the Unit currently consists of a Manager, two Coordinators, four faculty members who develop and teach undergraduate Medical Sciences courses, and the BMSUE Laboratory Manager, who manages all Medical Sciences laboratory courses.
**Responsibilities**:
The BMSUE Laboratory Manager is responsible for providing an exceptional learning experience for the students in their Medical Sciences laboratory courses. Reporting to the BMSUE Manager, the BMSUE Laboratory Manager is a key member of the BMSUE office contributing to the smooth operation and maintenance, and providing effective and efficient management of, the Medical Sciences Undergraduate Teaching Laboratories. The role ensures that Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTA), undergraduate students in the Interdisciplinary Medical Sciences (IMS) third and fourth year laboratory courses, and students in the IMS Masters program, have the required information, training, documentation, and resources to ensure the successful completion of their undergraduate laboratory courses. The role acts as a point person for health and safety issues, ensures safe laboratory practices are employed, participates in the development of protocols, performs laboratory techniques, and trains users of the facility.
**Qualifications**:
**Education**:
- Master of Science degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. Basic Medical Sciences)
**Experience**:
- 3 years’ experience in a research and/or teaching laboratory environment performing various laboratory techniques
- 3 years lab management experience, experience in a number of biochemical and molecular biology techniques and the use of laboratory equipment is preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of mammalian systems (either physiology, anatomy, biochemistry or pharmacology)
- Broad knowledge of basic medical sciences disciplines
- Demonstrated skills in functional assays, cell culture, molecular techniques, biochemical techniques, imaging techniques, and In vivo techniques
- Advanced computer hardware and software skills, with experience in Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word, Excel)
- Professional manner, tact, diplomacy and discretion in interacting with trainees and other University personnel on a daily basis to maximize the undergraduate student experience
- Self-driven, independent thinker who is highly motivated and possesses an intrinsic passion for quality
- Ability to prioritize and multi-task in a demanding, interruptive environment
- Strong record of teamwork with the motivation and ability to work independently with little or no supervision
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and confidence dealing with all levels within, and external to, the Unit
- Ability to provide guidance, support and feedback in a way that is positively received
- Excellent troubleshooting ability along with hands-on expertise in technical support
- Ability to provide guidance on the proper and safe use of materials and equipment and to adhere to legislated safety requirements and Western safety policies
- Demonstrated ability to research/investigate issues and resolve problems
- Familiarity with University policies and procedures preferred
