The job provides intensive transition and academic support to Indigenous students through one-on-one advising and group interventions. The job acts as the primary contact for Indigenous learners from orientation through to graduation and transition to post-secondary education or the workforce. The job serves as a trusted advocate, advisor, mentor, tutor and career counsellor, particularly in those instances when Indigenous learners are experiencing transition and academic difficulties.
The job advises and coaches Indigenous students and evaluates academic records, explores academic options and alternatives. The incumbent also assists students in developing strategies for academic success and monitors progress.
The job works to build positive relationships with Indigenous students, provides support to learning, engagement and well-being. In addition, the job provides leadership for advancing academic, developmental and cultural programs and services for First Nations, Inuit and Métis (FNMI) learners
**Duties and responsibilities**
- ** Indigenous student support**
- Provide direct supports to students
- Counsel and advise students, individually or in groups, on academic issues
- Lead programs, services and academic supports to meet individual needs and remove barriers necessary for students to thrive
- Coordinate opportunities for learning from Knowledge Keepers and Elders
- Meet regularly with students for academic planning, career exploration and wellness activities
- Monitor academic progress and troubleshoot strategies for credit recovery, attendance improvement
- Conduct high school preparation activities
- Ensure high school plan and career aspirations are aligned
- Assist in course selection process to ensure progress is made toward career goals
**2. Program development**
- Develop Transition Programs and Vertical Teams with junior high and high schools
- Collaborate with schools to identify incoming students
- Work with students to develop a graduation and career action plan to include best program to meet academic, employment and post-secondary goals
- Create student career transition plans
- Collaborate with teachers, counselors and advisors to assure continued use of transition process to help students successfully adapt to the rigours of the high school experience
**3. Relationships and communication**
- Create relationships with parents, families, care givers, community organizations and resources
- Facilitate transition programs, social justice initiatives, leadership clubs, cultural activities, career planning, tutoring and parent engagement
- Develop, coordinate, facilitate, and present academic and career development information
- Facilitate presentations to students on goal setting, study skills, high school programming, credits and careers
- Work in conjunction with grade coordinators, student services and learning designate to plan for success in high school completion
- Share reports and student progress with school student support team and administration
**4. Community connection**
- Assist the school in the coordination of cultural opportunities for students
- Assist students in connecting with community resources
- Work with community partners to establish experiential opportunities
- Locate and create opportunities to build relationships with students and families through community and industry events
**5. Maintain professional knowledge through a range of professional development activities**
**Knowledge and experience**
**Diploma, or degree in Education, Counselling, Child and Youth Care or Social Work, plus three years of directly related experience**
- Familiar with First Nations, Inuit and Metis Cultures within the region
- Extensive experience working with FNMI students, their families and communities
- Knowledge of alternative education opportunities and an understanding of the high school curriculum
- Knowledge of program development and delivery techniques and principles
- Knowledge of records management, including FOIP Legislation
- Knowledge of workplace safety and awareness of Occupational Health and Safety regulations
- Understanding of the multiplicity of social services available in the community to support students
- General knowledge of the Division /department operations, business, program, goals and objectives
