**PRIMARY PURPOSE**
The Analytical Chemist (Engineering Biology) is responsible for operating, programming, and maintaining mass spectrometers and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) equipment, including analyzing associated data, for the development and implementation of high-throughput metabolomic and proteomic techniques.

**ACCOUNTABILITIES**
- Operates and maintains quadrupole time-of-flight (Q-TOF), triple quadrupole (TQ), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and rapid solid phase extraction systems with a high degree of independence.
- Contributes to method development for LC-MS workflows, has high troubleshooting skills with both instruments and methods.
- Analyzes metabolomic and proteomic data generated by this equipment using the latest software and techniques.
- Assists in interfacing equipment and data with a laboratory information management system (LIMS), including assisting with troubleshooting automated laboratory workflows.
- Works closely with team members to execute the design-build-test-learn cycle of engineering biology projects and services. Trains team members in metabolomic and proteomic workflows.
- Devises innovative approaches for measuring key parameters that are currently unmeasured or difficult to measure.
- Consistently and clearly documents work using an electronic lab notebook.
- Implements quality control measures into automated systems to track performance and detect/predict failure events.
- Contributes to the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Quality Assurance (QA)/Quality Control (QC) programs through adherence to SOPs and QA/QC standards.
- Maintains a clean, safe, and orderly working environment in the laboratory.
- Acts as an advocate and ambassador for the Global Institute for Food Security and specifically the Engineering Biology Platform.
- The majority of the employee’s time will be spent on-site in the laboratory.

**QUALIFICATIONS**
- Graduate degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Engineering, or related field.
- At least 2 years experience directly operating LC-MS equipment (_e. _quadrupole time-of-flight (Q-TOF), and/or triple quadrupole (TQ), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)_)
- At least 2 years experience using software to analyze metabolomic or proteomic data (_e. MassHunter, Mass Profiler Professional, Chromeleon, Mass Frontier, TraceFinder_).
- Experience in laboratory protocol execution, troubleshooting, and starting new projects.
- Experience developing and implementing SOP’s, and training others in laboratory techniques.
- Experience working with a laboratory information management system (LIMS).
- Experience with molecular biology, microbiology, precision fermentation, or related data are considered assets.

**SKILLS**
- Capable of programming, operating, and maintaining mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography equipment.
- Strong interpersonal skills including experience collaborating with a diverse team of technical and non-technical staff members.
- Demonstrated protocol development and analytical skills including problem solving, troubleshooting, and recommending solutions.
- Passionate about learning new technologies and creating innovative solutions.
- Effective organizational skills and the acumen to handle complex situations and manage multiple objectives with competing deadlines.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills including experience organizing information and presenting to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to establish and maintain the level of professional relationships that support exceptional collaboration within GIFS.
