2nd Mate

**Job Overview**

The Second Mate is responsible for the Navigation, loading, discharging and care of the cargo during the voyage in compliance with the Chief Officer's instructions in a safe, efficient, and cost-effective manner while adhering to relevant legislation, and the Company's Management System.

**Qualifications/Requirements**
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Watchkeeping Mate Unlimited (OOW) Certificate of Competency
- DP Unlimited Certificate
- Proven track record in relevant offshore experience within the marine sector; recent offshore standby experience on a PSV or AHTS vessel is strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated Leadership Ability, communicating with charterers, safety leadership and employee/team development.
- MED in Basic Safety Training
- MED in Survival Craft Training
- MED in Advanced Firefighting
- MED for Officers
- SEN Level II
- Ship Security Officer or Ship Personnel with designated security duties certificate.
- Must pass Physical (Marine Medical with no restrictions, Drug Screen and Background Check).
- Marine Advanced First Aid
- Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than fast rescue boats.
- Stability II
- H2S Alive
- WHMIS 2015
- ECDIS
- GMDSS
- Valid Canadian Passport
- Passenger Safety Management Certificate

**Responsibilities**
- Safe, efficient and cost-effective operations, in accordance with the Chief Officers’ instructions, relevant legislation, and the Company's GSMS System.
- The Second Mate shall keep the Chief Officer, the Shipboard Management Team and other functions on board well informed so that they can co-ordinate and control activities thereby maximizing safety, quality and environmental protection.
- The Second Mate is third in command in the Deck Department and is in all respects responsible for conducting his duties in the best interest of the Company.
- The Second Mate shall report to the Chief Officer such defects, non-conformances and other matters which could present a risk to health and safety, pollution, quality of work and operational performance.
- The Second Mate shall keep himself informed of all matters concerning vessel's operations enabling him to take command in cases of necessity.

The Second Mate has the following specific responsibilities:

- Assists Chief Officer in the maintenance of safety, firefighting and life-saving equipment, and returning company’s monthly updated report on same.
- Responsible to the Master for maintenance of all navigation equipment
- Responsible to the Master for maintaining charts and nautical publications in an up-to-date condition.
- Responsible to the Master for upkeep for publications on Canadian Shipping Acts, Canadian Ports Corporation, Coast Guard Publications and department of Defense Publications.
- Responsible to the Master for voyage planning.
- Testing and maintenance of radio/emergency/batteries
- Watchkeeping officer as directed by Master
- Officer on deck as directed by Master
- “Night on Board” duty as directed by Master.
- To control all areas of the vessel belonging to his field of responsibility are kept clean and tidy, and in good working condition.
- To manage and supervise checks, maintenance and repairs of deck and hull items as delegated by the Master in cooperation with the Chief Engineer when the latter has the function of head of vessel's maintenance.
