Job Summary Develops, implements and delivers career development programming tailored to undergraduate Computer Science students' needs. Advises, instructs, coaches and supports students on individual and group basis on career planning, job search and interview skills, and presentation and communications skills. Significant number of students are international and/or ESL. Liaise with company recruiters regarding present and future employment opportunities for CS students. Researches and targets industry specific employers for their participation in CS Student Development initiatives. Organizational Status Reports to the Computer Science Special Programs Coordinator. Works in collaboration with UBC Career Development, Career Services, Student Development and Services. Work Performed Support UBC Computer Science students by designing and delivering career development programming that is tailored to their needs, enhances their communication and leadership skills, provides multiple opportunities for them to interact with employers and industry professionals, builds community, and eases their transition from students to career-ready graduates. Specific initiatives include the Computer Science tri-mentoring program, technical interview skills practice sessions, industry panels, and job search, resume, networking and presentation skills workshops. Identify and implement overarching career development themes for programming. Engage with existing industry and alumni connections to gain employer perspectives on student professional development skill gaps. Actively solicit feedback from student representatives on effectiveness of current career development offerings, suggested modifications, additional programming ideas, and effective ways to market offerings to students. In consultation with CS department's associate head of undergraduate affairs, Student Development Committee chair and Special Projects Coordinator, assess CS student career development offerings and processes in light of emerging career trends, current programming offered by other UBC student development/careers-related offices on campus, resources required, and desired CS departmental engagement with industry and alumni partners. Create and update online careers-related content for students on CS department external website. Evaluate and assess CS department student career programs and services in coordination with the Special Program Coordinator. Develop assessment methods, collect and record statistical information and feedback from both student and industry participants, analyze documents and report results, and integrate suggestions and improvements into programs and services. CS Tri-Mentoring Program In close collaboration with the Computer Science Department's Special Projects coordinator, design, develop, implement and assess the CS department's tri-mentoring program, a career-focused mentorship program that matches industry mentors with students, and students with one another. The program typically has a total of ~350-400 industry mentor and student participants per academic year. Matching students and mentors based on commonalities in computer science or careers areas of interest, and managing waitlists for the program. Organizing a series of program kickoff receptions (typically 3/year, with ~125-140 participants/reception) that include both informal networking and more structured "speed mentoring" activities with students and mentors; also includes presentation delivery at the event and supervising student and volunteer registration assistants.
