Job Summary

Organizational Status
The research assistant reports directly to Dr. Torsten Nielsen and will interact frequently with other members of the research team, such as graduate students, the senior technologist and senior research associate, on a project-specific basis to achieve project goals.

Work Performed
- Works with graduate students and senior staff to design experiments
- Plans and performs experiments; troubleshoots problems when they arise
- Collects and records experimental data; analyses, interprets and reports on results
- Presents relevant papers of interest at journal clubs
- Provides guidance and training to new undergraduate/graduate students in proper laboratory procedures, techniques and use of equipment.
- Assists senior technologist in organizing and maintaining reagents, supplies and equipment in the laboratory
- Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Errors and incorrect decisions made in this position could jeopardize the experiments performed, compromise data quality and/or delay project completion.

Supervision Received
Works under general supervision by Principal Investigator (Dr. Torsten Nielsen), the laboratory’s senior research associate (Dr. Shilpa Patil), and senior research technologist (Angela Goytain).

Supervision Given
While the research assistant is not expected to provide direct supervision to others, s/he may be asked to provide guidance and training to new undergraduate and graduate students in proper laboratory procedures, techniques and use of equipment.

Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own

Preferred Qualifications
- DNA & RNA extraction and purification, and PCR
- Processing and handling tissue specimens
- Protein analysis: protein extraction and quantification, electrophoresis, immunostaining, confocal microscopy
- Must be able work both independently and as part of a team
- Good organization skills and ability to pay attention to detail is essential
- Must have strong oral and written communication skills in scientific English
