**SUMMARY**:
The CAD & Inspection Technician is responsible for supporting product design, reverse engineering, dimensional inspection, and quality validation of automotive components. This role combines SolidWorks-based CAD modeling with hands-on measurement and inspection work using precision metrology tools, CMM with MCOSMOS, GD&T interpretation, and PDM/Vault management. The technician partners closely with Engineering, Quality, Production, and external vendors to resolve dimensional issues and drive continuous improvement.
**ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES**:
- CAD & Product Design Support:
- Create and revise 3D CAD models and engineering drawings using SolidWorks.
- Manage CAD data within SolidWorks PDM Vault.
- Support Engineering with drawing checks and manufacturability reviews.
- Assist in creating and maintaining technical documentation and BOMs.
- Inspection, Metrology, and Quality Analysis:
- Perform dimensional inspection of machined, cast, stamped, and fabricated parts.
- Operate CMM equipment using MCOSMOS software.
- Capture dimensional data using CMM and 3D scanners.
- Use precision measurement tools such as calipers, micrometers, and bore gauges.
- Conduct FAI, PPAP measurement packages, and capability studies.
- Analyze deviations and identify manufacturing or tooling issues.
- Provide feedback to vendors regarding product or dimensional concerns.
- Maintain calibration and quality control records.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Work with Engineering, Quality, Production, and Supply Chain to resolve part issues.
- Participate in problem-solving activities and continuous improvement.
- Assist with documentation and administrative tasks supporting engineering and quality.
- Operational Excellence & Safety:
- Follow safety and regulatory standards.
- Maintain organized working files and inspection logs.
- Work independently and meet deadlines while ensuring accuracy.
**REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE**:
- 3+ years of SolidWorks modeling and engineering drawing experience.
- 3+ years of dimensional inspection or quality measurement experience.
- Strong knowledge of ASME Y14.5 GD&T standards.
- Hands-on experience using a CMM and MCOSMOS software.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
- Proficiency with measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, bore gauges).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office including SharePoint.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs.
**PREFERRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE**:
- Diploma in Mechanical Technology or related field.
- Experience using 3D scanners for reverse engineering.
- Experience working under ISO9001 or IATF 16949 quality systems.
- SolidWorks PDM experience.
- Strong report-writing and documentation skills.
- Knowledge of automotive component design or development.
- Flexible and able to support cross-functional teams.
EDUCATION:
Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology, CAD Technology, or related field preferred. Equivalent experience considered.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Manufacturing, warehouse, and office environment. May require standing, PPE use, and mínimal travel.
EXPERIENCE:
3-5 years of CAD modeling, mechanical inspection, metrology, or product engineering experience in automotive or industrial manufacturing.
**PROGRESSION METRICS**:
- Completes at least one major reverse engineering or inspection automation project annually.
- Reduces inspection rework or measurement variance by 10-15%.
- Demonstrates increased independence on complex CAD/CMM tasks.
- Achieves 98%+ accuracy in inspection reporting.
- Presents dimensional findings and recommendations to Engineering leadership.
