**Overview**
The Settlement Worker In Schools (SWIS) plays a vital role in supporting immigrant and refugee students and their families as they navigate the educational system. This position involves working closely with schools, community organizations, and families to ensure that students receive the necessary resources and support to succeed academically and socially. The SWIS will foster a welcoming environment that promotes inclusivity and understanding within the school community.
**Duties**
- Provide direct support to immigrant and refugee students, helping them acclimate to the school environment.
- Facilitate communication between families and school staff to address academic or social concerns.
- Organize and lead workshops for parents on topics such as school policies, cultural integration, and available resources.
- Collaborate with teachers and administrators to develop strategies that enhance student engagement and success.
- Supervise students during activities, ensuring a safe and supportive atmosphere.
- Maintain accurate records of student progress and family interactions.
- Advocate for the needs of students within the school system and connect families with community resources.
**Qualifications**
- Experience in supervising youth or working in educational settings is preferred.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport with students, families, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Knowledge of cultural diversity issues and sensitivity to the challenges faced by immigrant communities.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Proficiency in a second language is an asset but not required.
- A commitment to fostering an inclusive environment for all students.
