**Viola's Place Society**, New Glasgow, NS is hiring a **Full-Time Shelter Support Worker**. We are a 20-bed emergency homeless shelter supporting both men & women age of 25+.

**Location**: 189 Marsh Street, New Glasgow, NS

**Start Date**: As soon as possible

**Salary**: $20-$23 hourly

**Shifts**: Full-time - Evenings, overnights, days, weekends, weekdays, holidays, etc. You will be scheduled for a mix of day shifts 7am-7pm and overnight shifts 7pm-7am. Three shifts on and three off.

**The role of the Shelter Support Worker will include but is not limited to**:

- Provide a safe, supportive, non-judgmental environment to shelter clients
- Perform intake/discharge duties (navigating client throughout the shelter; recording and storing medications; checking and accounting for belongings; checking for safety hazards and contraband)
- Contribute to meeting the personal, physical, emotional, psycho-social needs of the client in a holistic approach while performing functions according to facility policies
- Maintain accurate and concise case notes
- Model positive behaviour and maintain good relations with clients and other agencies by communicating in a supportive, and respectful manner while maintaining confidentiality
- Meal preparation and maintaining the cleanliness of the shelter

**Requirements**:

- Must have excellent verbal, written, listening skills and maintain confidentiality
- Basic computer skills required with the ability to learn and utilize new software (i.e., HIFIS)
- Experience with adults experiencing homelessness, mental illness, and substance abuse is preferred
- Must have the ability to remain calm and respond effectively in emergency situations
- Must have the ability to deescalate conflict in a professional, compassionate, and effective manner
- Must be reliable and mature
- Ability to clearly communicate rules to ensure positive, constructive environment within the shelter
- Must be adaptable to change and have the ability to work under pressure
- Other duties and requirements may be asked of the successful applicant

**Qualifications**:

- Human Services Diploma or other related post secondary education preferred
- Relevant work experience preferred
- A combination of education and experience will be considered for this position
- A criminal record check and vulnerable sector check is required
- Must be 19+ years of age
- **Must have the ability to work a variety of 12 hours shifts, such as 7:00am-7:00pm, 7:00pm-7:00am**, etc. Schedule is made one month in advance.

**To Apply**:
Pay: $20.00-$23.00 per hour

Expected hours: 36 - 45 per week
