- Collaborates with projects stakeholders to design and visualize ideas and concepts
- Designs and Illustrates concepts in 2D and 3D using industry-standard software and design tools
- Works with team members at Emerging Media Lab and UBC Studios and creates digital graphics assets for a range of creative media projects including educational, training, and communication projects.
- Work with project managers, producers, designers, and developers to ensure the 2D/3D models and assets function as desired
- Creates 2D and 3D concepts
- Models environments and props in 3D design software such as Maya
- Animates 3D objects
- Troubleshoots photogrammetry processes
- Creates realistic and stylized concepts for clients
- Maks design briefs
- Implements assets in Unity
- Models low poly Mobile/VR ready assets, renders, and bakes textures in VRay
- Troubleshoots technical issues and optimization
- Renders and optimizes assets captured via photogrammetry and 3D scanning
- Manages assets created by other team members and students
- Creates 3D models (hard surface, high poly, and low poly) in 3D design software such as Maya, Blender, and ZBrush
- Develops and presents training workshops for faculty, staff, and students
- Carry out duties in a professional and positive manner
- Be a positive and creative force on the team
- Provides support and assistance to less experienced staff and student employees
- Maintains relevant professional designation through professional development, maintaining up to date knowledge of current digital media creation techniques, standards, software, and equipment.
- Performs other duties as required.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
The primary focus of this unit is to provide high-quality digital assets for educational and communication projects. This position makes decisions regarding the development of media resources and technologies. Disruptions to these projects or improper delivery of assets (over budget, over time or improperly produced) could have a significant impact on clients and their ability to deliver on strategic goals (academic mission, sustainability, operations, etc.)
Errors in judgment, poor planning, or failure to act decisively could have a detrimental effect on the delivery and consumption of digital media resources by clients. Unreliable systems or poor project management could lead to missed contractual obligations for performance and availability which would damage the reputation of UBC and UBC-IT. This could adversely impact the University community, including the stakeholders involved, which would result in possible lost productivity, funding, and revenue.
Supervision Received
This position reports to the Executive Producer, UBC Studios within the Application Management Services Group in UBC Information Technology. This person also takes direction from the Team Lead, or designate.
Supervision Given
Provides project-based supervision to student employees.
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum two year diploma in graphic design, interactive media production.
- Higher education in 3D design, interactive design, animation, or game design is an asset. Minimum of 3 years related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. - Minimum of three years experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. - Advanced skills in 2D/3D design, compositing, and 2D/3D animation.
- Demonstrated intermediate expertise in digital asset production including animation, motion graphics, visual effects, and immersive media technologies such as virtual reality
- Proficiency with standard industry software (eg. 4D, Maya, ZBrush, Blender, Adobe After Effects)
- Practical knowledge of game engine software such as Unity and Unreal
- Demonstrated understanding of Specialized design software including but not limited to Maya, Blender, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Animate
- Knowledge of related industry-stand
