Respiratory Therapy Educator

**Qualifications**:
- Respiratory Therapy Diploma in conjunction with a Bachelor’s of Science
- Additional certification, workshops and experience in principles and methodologies of adult education preferred
- Experience caring for and working with Long Term Ventilation Patients preferred
- Experience facilitating learning from an evidence-based practice perspective preferred
- Certification that complement the patient population at the Centre preferred
- Specialized clinical practice that supports patient populations at the Centre preferred
- Experience in quality improvement methodologies and participation in research preferred
- Registered Respiratory Therapist with current registration in good standing with the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario
- Current/previous experience as an Educator in a health care organization within a post-acute or community setting
- Experience and demonstrated success as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) (3-5 years' experience)
- Demonstrated ability to provide clinical educational leadership and mentoring to staff
- Evidence of satisfactory attendance record

- Should be aware of conditions and measures that may affect the safety of patients, residents, students, employees, volunteers, physicians and visitors
**Accountabilities**:
**Education**:
- Role model; mentor and facilitate knowledge transfer among staff both internal and with external partners including patients, family/caregivers and external organizations.
- Lead in the provision of orientation to staff and students.
- Assesses learning needs of individual staff including both existing and new hires across the Centre.
- Provides education to West Park patients, families to meet discharge goals and provide knowledge, skill acquisition to support the patient post discharge.
- Develops education plans containing goals, objectives, resources and evaluation activities.
- Provides leadership in designing and delivering education arising from new or changing clinical practices.
- Develops education plans for staff and patients that includes annual reviews, re-certifications, just-in-time education and required learning resulting from ongoing competency requirements and changes in practice.
- Collaborates with Interprofessional Clinical Education Lead, Clinical Nurse Educators, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Clinical Practice Leaders and Service Managers to identify opportunities for integration of interprofessional learning assessments and education plans.
- Maintains learning attendance records and monitors the implementation of educational plans and relate activities (eg) teach-back/return demonstrations.
- Promotes learner responsibility/accountability for their own learning and professional development.
- Works in partnership with Service Managers and Clinical Nurse Educators to develop Learning Plans for remediation activities for West Park staff.
- Supports, mentors and coaches staff and students (as appropriate), in achieving their learning goals and objectives.
**Consultation/Collaboration**:
- Evaluates effectiveness of educational plans and related activities inviting feedback from patients, families, and staff.
- Identifies opportunities to influence and augment a positive learning environment by bringing forward recommendations with draft learning plans and related strategies for consideration.
- Collaborates with appropriate stakeholders in planning, developing, implementing and evaluating corporate and other educational initiatives including those addressing policy/procedures.
- Participates in relevant Centre's committees and other working groups to support a clinical education perspective and articulate other educational activities that are underway or being proposed.
- Collaborates with the Interprofessional Clinical Education Lead on RT student placement opportunities and any arising opportunities to enhance student or instructor experience.
- Collaborates with Service Managers in interviewing, hiring and contributing to the evaluation of staff when appropriate. (eg) progress with orientation checklists.
**Research and Scholarship**:
- Maintains and continually augments skills and competencies in leading practices in education and knowledge translation.
- Develops external relationships and coalitions to share resources, knowledge and expertise in educational approaches and design.
- Supports the development of educational materials for corporate initiatives and interprofessional team members.
- Supports and participates in the implementation of evidence based practice and quality improvement initiatives with Professional Practice, units/programs and corporately.
