Specialist Underwriter, Surety

Reporting to the AVP, Developer Surety & Home Warranty, the Senior Underwriter will work with our multiple MGA partners across Deposit Insurance, Home Warranty and other product lines, and senior Surety management to enable and deliver the strategic and profitable growth plans for this line of business.

Deposit Insurance is $58M in GWP, and National Home Warranty is $6M in GWP. Incumbent will be accountable for helping drive the growth of Deposit Insurance by 10% in GWP. Deposit Insurance and NHW have a combined $20B of exposure.

What you’ll do
- Assist the AVP Developer Surety in the underwriting of Deposit Insurance submissions, producing and presenting special acceptance submissions to ACAN Executive and Reinsurance panel.
- Owning the implementation of new product/MGA opportunities and owning the successful delivery of strategic goals for those products
- Leading delivery of enhanced Deposit Insurance MI and reporting and being a key point of contact with the Surety data team to deliver the Surety data warehouse.
- Producing materials for and chairing monthly management forums with Westmount and National Home Warranty, as well as the Deposit Insurance Decision Forum.
- Supporting day-to-day activities within National Home Warranty, including collateral management and de-enrollments
- Ensure adherence to the risk and control environment of the Deposit Insurance business.
- Lead and support production and analysis of monthly reporting for Deposit Insurance, Home Warranty, and other MGA partners.
- Lead and support embedding new product and proposition opportunities, producing all required governance and product development material, and presenting at various forums.
- Lead and support risk assessments and ensure timely delivery of actions to support the close of QA reviews.

What you’ll bring
- University Degree
- ACSB Designation from the Surety Association of Canada would be an asset.
- 5+ years of working experience in insurance/underwriting
- Broad knowledge of business, including governance, business risk, finance, distribution, and reinsurance specific to the insurance/surety industry.
- Solid understanding of the construction industry.
- Experience working in Surety insurance is an asset.
- Excellent relationship leadership skills to be front facing with MGA partners.
- Detailed knowledge of the issues and approaches to the Surety industry and underwriting matters, knowledge of the accounting cycle, basic knowledge of construction-related terms and processes, understanding of the Surety model and possessing marketing, negotiating and analytical abilities.
- Strong influencing skills and ability to develop effective partner relationships
- Ability to build trust and credibility with both internal and external partners.
- Understanding of business, underwriting and corporate risk management and mitigation methods.
- Strong work ethic, genuine team player, and a very positive attitude
- Good analytical skills - the ability to sort and interpret large volumes of data and assess the risk to Aviva while keeping the ‘big picture’ in mind.
