**Role Purpose**:
As steward of animal welfare, responsible for monitoring and maintaining live bird welfare at Maple Lodge Farms throughout the production cycle and verifying that animal welfare practices are compliant to the MLF Animal Welfare Program.

**Key Accountabilities and Activities**:

- Ensures the Animal Welfare procedures are followed, and corrective actions are taken to comply with Animal Welfare Program and MLF’s requirements by following up with appropriate parties on deviations and corrective actions.
- Monitors incoming loads for bird condition, truck unloading process, bird handling, hanging process, dead birds on arrival (DOAs) evaluation and disposal.
- Monitors tiers, mods, drawers, dollies condition and check for birds left in containers after cleaning process.
- Monitors the stunning, cutting and bleeding process and the effectiveness of the backup cutters.
- Performs quality checks (birds are checked for broken/bruised wings and legs).
- Monitors chicken foot health using the AARP Paw Scoring System as part of the regular monitoring program or as requested by the AW Manager/AW Supervisor.
- Back-up for Animal Welfare Bird Monitor (monitoring and maintaining live bird welfare in bird holding facilities from the time live birds are received, through to their transfer to slaughter).
- Reports any issues with live loads to Live Receiving Supervisors and ensures that distressed loads are prioritized in slaughter sequence.
- Holds/tracks suspect birds that are in process and communicates necessary information to AW Manager and Supervisor and or Operations personnel so that necessary adjustments can be made to the process.
- Monitors and records all tasks/checks assigned and completes the relevant documents/records in a timely manner.
- Remote Video Auditing of the key elements of the AW Program if required.
- Provide information and possible solutions that will help management to correct identified issues and work towards future improvements related the AW program.
- Liaises with CFIA inspection staff during CFIA inspection/investigation.
- Supports all other departmental needs as required.
- Participates and cooperates during internal audits when required.
- Follows all relevant departmental policies, processes, standard operating procedures, and instructions so that work is carried out in a controlled and consistent manner.
- Complies with the Good Manufacturing Practices laid out by the Company.
- Plans, organizes, and executes requested projects, various analyses, and reports.
- Other duties as assigned (the above tasks are representative, but not all inclusive).

**Knowledge, Skills and Experience**:

- Previous work experience working with livestock is considered an asset
- Comfortable working with live chicken year-round
- Must have strong tolerance of a farm environment (scents, animal feces, muck, blood, etc.)
- Analytical, with problem-identification and problem-solving capabilities
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment where attention to detail and effective multi-tasking is essential
- Self-starter, well organized, detail oriented and a team player
- Excellent learning abilities, hands-on technical orientation and highly motivated
- Good interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
- Computer literacy (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Knowledge of the Health of Animals Act and CFIA humane poultry handling procedures an asset
- Working knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), WHMIS, etc.

**Education and Certification Requirements**:

- A minimum of three (3) years** **of experience in food industry or agriculture, preferably meat, and in a unionized environment.
- High school diploma required.
