Terms and conditions of employment are as outlined in the Support Staff Collective Agreement. The Veterinary Technician and Assistant programs use the licensed on-campus veterinary hospital as a major site for student lab activities in all semesters of the program. Live animals are housed during the academic year and the facility operates as a veterinary hospital (GCVH). **Located in Orillia** and reporting to the Manager and Primary Veterinarian the incumbent supports student learning activities, organizes the oversight of animal care, and oversees the maintenance and implementation of hospital routines and equipment to ensure all areas of GCVH are organized and maintained in a manner to support humane, safe and efficient handling, housing and treatment of animal patients. Specific duties include, but are not limited to: - Supporting student learning activities o Communicate student feedback to student and faculty using rubrics and checklists o Confirmation and reinforcement of essential competencies during animal care and lab practice time o Collaborating with faculty to formulate a plan of action, and provide feedback to students and faculty to ensure students meet competencies o Provide mentorship and strategies for success to students, using expertise in the field of veterinary medicine o Troubleshoot student inquiries and direct them to appropriate resources o Provide support to laboratory faculty for scheduled courses - Supporting the care of animals o Organization and oversight of student led animal care responsibilities o Supporting students with medical procedures involving animals o Communication and problem solving with students regarding animal health status o Identifying program needs for veterinary coverage and collaborating with DVMs regarding animal health status o Communicate with the team to support student and patient scheduling throughout the clinic setting - Support maintenance and inventory management of clinic o Ordering supplies and monitoring supply status o Knowledge and implementation of controlled drug regulations o Organizing quality control and maintenance schedules for hospital equipment o Oversight of general cleanliness and maintenance of clinic o Developing standard operating procedures for new equipment - Meeting accreditation requirements o Understand and support accreditation processes associated with the Veterinary Technician and Assistant Programs o Accurate completion of processes for accreditation including site visits and preparation of material o Identifying program and clinic deficiencies and working with accreditors to rectify **Qualifications**: - Successfully completed a two-year OAVT accredited Veterinary Technician or Technology diploma - Must possess, and maintain, current registration in good standing with the Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians (OAVT) - Minimum of five years’ experience as a Registered Veterinary Technician - Leadership within the field and/or clinical setting - Adequate rabies vaccination titre (>0.5 IU/ml) as per Health Canada - Experience in training and demonstrating skills to others - Demonstrated knowledge of health and safety rules and regulations - Proven approach to team-based communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills - Self-directed worker with ability to troubleshoot difficult situations - Demonstrated planning, coordinating and time management skills - Proven analytical, critical thinking, decision making, and problem-solving skills - Highly skilled in the use of AviMark EMR for management of clinical needs and patient records - Experience with Microsoft Suite, including Sharepoint - Ability to meet the physical requirements of the position, which includes lifting equipment and animals up to 44 lbs., and over 44lbs (on occasion) - Must be available for non-traditional weekday shifts, as the schedule will be adjusted each semester to cover the animal hospital hours to meet the student needs - Must possess a valid driver’s license (for transportation of program animals) Alternate formats will be provided upon request throughout the recruitment and selection process.
