Established in 1982, Riverdale Immigrant Women's Centre (RIWC) is a community-based registered charity founded with a mission to empower immigrant and minority women and their families. RIWC delivers its services through a holistic and integrated service framework that addresses the social, cultural and economic determinants of healthy and vibrant immigrant communities. RIWC is based in the Riverdale Hub.

Position Summary:
The applicant not only shares our values, but is creative, versatile, and passionate about sustainability, organic gardening, food security and community. The assistant will assist the gardener in tending to the rain water garden and rooftop organic vegetable garden to ensure a steady supply of produce for the Social Gardener Cafe menu and house-made products. The assistant will also support retail product development, food preparation in the vegan cafe, and special events (e.g., Rooftop Garden Open House, BBQs, etc.).

Duties & Responsibilities:

- Maintain the container gardens on the rooftop to grow seasonal vegetables, herbs, edible flowers, and pollinator friendly plants.
- Carry out the following daily activities: seedling preparation, planting, harvesting, soil amendments, pest management, weeding, tilling, watering, composting, seed saving, sanitization of tools, pots, etc.
- Ensure tidiness and organization of greenhouse and all materials.
- Assist cafe team in preparing retail products, including jarred and baked goods.
- Assist in selling produce and promoting the cafe and garden at special events.

General:

- Ensure all COVID-19 safety and disinfecting standards and procedures are followed.
- Assist in marketing and social media activities to promote the garden and cafe.
- Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

- Enrolled in or completed a horticulture or sustainable urban agriculture certificate, diploma, or degree program.
- Experience in organic, urban, and community gardening preferred.
- Experience in the food service and hospitality industry.
- Food Handler’s Certification.
- Motivation to follow through on projects and bring forward new ideas to advance the garden.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team, as well as independently.
- Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
- Social media skills are an asset.
- Strong computer (MS Office and G-Suite) skills.
- Valid drivers’ license and access to a vehicle are assets.

**Job Types**: Fixed term contract, Seasonal
Contract length: 9 weeks

**Salary**: $16.00 per hour

Schedule:

- Day shift
- Monday to Friday
- Weekend availability
