**Purpose**

The Manager, Domestic Taxation contributes to the overall success of the Global Taxation team in Canada, ensuring the fulfillment of the compliance and financial reporting functions with respect to income taxes for certain Canadian subsidiaries of The Bank of Nova Scotia (legal entity) (the “Bank”). The role reports to the Director Domestic Subsidiaries Taxation with primary responsibility for the compliance and financial reporting functions with respect to income taxes and has opportunities to support the other Directors within the Domestic Taxation team on an as needed basis.

The Manager ensures that all tax initiatives and responsibilities are executed in support of the Bank’s business strategies and objectives and that all activities conducted are in compliance with governing regulations, and internal policies and procedures.

**Key Accountabilities**:

- Responsible for all aspects of Canadian direct tax compliance and financial statement reporting as it relates to certain Canadian subsidiaries of the Bank (the “Subsidiaries”), including:

- compilation of the statutory tax rates of the Subsidiaries;
- preparation of monthly/quarterly/annual income tax provisions and the annual Federal and provincial income and capital tax returns, including the annual provision-to-return reconciliation;
- preparation of quarterly reconciliations for current, deferred & capital tax provisions and balance sheet balances where applicable using the Bank’s Longview tax provision platform;
- review and analysis of Notices of Assessment/Reassessment received by the Subsidiaries, including reconciliation thereof to statements of accounts from government authorities;
- assist in analysis of tax provision and components thereof to assist with business line reporting;
- complete and/or review the tax disclosures contained within the financial statements;
- maintain well documented files for ease of answering queries from both the financial statement auditors and the tax authorities;
- evaluation and determination of impact of any legislative changes; and
- coordinate with Global Finance partners on matters as they relate to tax matters for the Subsidiaries.
- Position requires working closely with certain stakeholders (discussed below) in order to champion a customer focused culture:

- Assist the senior members of the domestic tax leadership team in managing the relationships with government auditors, including responding to audit queries, developing draft solutions and support for filing positions; and assisting in the conclusion of various Federal and Provincial income tax audits as required.
- Manage the relationship with the financial statement auditors for the Subsidiaries, including preparation of the working papers, responding to additional requests for information, and assisting in completion of the financial statement audit.
- Assist the Director Domestic Subsidiaries Taxation in the execution, maintenance and proper documentation of controls and processes around the tax functions in relation to the income tax provision and returns, including but not limited to SOX, and establish strong working relationships with various internal stakeholders (e.g. Finance, SOX, Accounting Policy).
- Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day tax functions and decisions to develop and implement frameworks, processes and communications which:

- Ensure the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational risk, regulatory compliance risk, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk, including but not limited to responsibilities under the Operational Risk Management Framework, Regulatory Compliance Risk Management Framework, AML/ATF Global Handbook and the Guidelines for Business Conduct.
- Provide other tax support as required, including but not limited to:

- Responsible for maintaining up-to-date knowledge of income and capital tax legislative developments with a focus on tax rate changes and their impact on the domestic subsidiaries, as applicable.
- Research and documentation of tax issues on various matters.
- Assist other members of the domestic subsidiaries tax team on ad-hoc issues and projects, as needed.
- Identify opportunities for process improvement and participate in implementing process automation for domestic subsidiaries tax return and tax provision preparation, as needed
- Champions a high-performance environment and contributes to an inclusive work environment.

**Experience / Education**:

- Professional accounting designation (CPA - CA, CPA - CMA or CPA - CGA) and completion of CPA in-depth tax course (all levels);
- Minimum of 5 years of related tax experience, preferably in a financial institution;
