Health Sciences North (HSN) is seeking an innovative leader for the position of Supervisor, Access and Flow position in our Access and Flow Department. In this role, you provide support to the flow of patients in and out of HSN beds, and provide weekend management support on other issues as required.

**REPORTING**:
Under the general direction of the Manager, System Transformation.
**DUTIES**:
- Plan, organize, direct, and evaluate the operation of the Bed Allocation department.
- Monitor the flow of patients in and out of HSN beds daily, and oversee the appropriate placement of patients.
- Identify patient flow delays and opportunities, and work with Clinical Managers, Clinical Leaders, and Charge Nurses to eliminate delays.
- Chair the daily morning bed report and work with various programs to develop a bed plan.
- Work with inpatient departments to establish individual plans for patients that need to be transferred within HSN or to external facilities for treatment.
- Oversee the use of HSN’s non-urgent patient transportation services daily.
- Communicate daily with the City of Sudbury’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Platoon Chief and Central Ambulance Communications Centre (CCAC) dispatches pertaining to HSN calls.
- Assist the Bed Allocation Clerks with patient placement issues or staffing issues.
- Communicate the bed status within HSN as required.
- Communicate with external partners to support the units with patient discharges as required.
- Monitor bed availability and liaise with the Emergency Department (ED) to prioritize patient placement based on Length of Stay (LOS) and HSN’s current bed management policy.
- Identify and implement patient flow and bed management strategies.
- Discuss bed management strategies with the Associate Vice President or on-call administrators.
- Implement process improvement initiatives based on lean principles to encourage efficient utilization of HSN resources.
- Develop and implement policies and procedures for HSN’s bed management, and recommend adjustments as required.
- Assume fiscal accountability of the departmental operation according to approved budget.
- Manage human resources which include: recruitment, selection and training.
- Guide, motivate, monitor and supervise staff, develop standards of performance, evaluate performance and make recommendations on disciplinary action as required.
- Oversee the work of others in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), its regulations, and HSN policies.
- Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
- Participate in the accreditation process and work to ensure that the program and HSN achieve, maintain and continually improve upon their accredited status.
- Teach, coach and lead staff in the development and monitoring of quality indicators and improvement initiatives.
- Engage in and foster professional development of all staff and provide opportunities for learning within budgeted resources.
- Ensure a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors; investigate report, debrief and take or direct corrective action as required on incidents.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders/organizations/community groups to achieve program objectives, integrate and link services and foster partnerships across the continuum of service delivery.
- Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
- Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.
- Perform other duties as required.
**QUALIFICATIONS**
**EDUCATION AND TRAINING**:
- Minimum of a Diploma in a regulated health profession, from an accredited program.
- Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.
**EXPERIENCE**:
- Minimum of two (2) years’ experience working in a clinical department within a health care environment.
- Experience working in a leadership/supervisory role is required.

- Demonstrated knowledge of the health care system and community resources.
- Demonstrated ability to identify and implement data indicators to continue quality improvement.
- Demonstrated clinical assessment and conflict management skills.
- Demonstrated time management, prioritization, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated ability to coach, advise and teach others using the principles of adult learning.
- Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of lean methodology for process improvement.
- Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
