Who Are Paid-on-Call Firefighters
Paid-on-Call firefighters are your neighbors, your colleagues, and your friends. They are people from all walks of life who respond when paged to deal with emergencies in our community. The fire and rescue service are one of the most diverse and challenging professions. You will train for situations such as structure fires, hazardous chemical spills, vehicle collisions, ice rescue, medical emergencies, and almost any possible emergency situation in between. We aim to develop our firefighters into highly skilled and active contributing members of the community who can work efficiently in a team environment while in extreme stress situations.

**What We Offer**:
**Comprehensive Training**: We provide life-long learning opportunities that extend beyond firefighting. From ladder operations and knot-tying to basic first aid, the skills you develop will benefit you both on and off the job. You will complete the Fire Department Recruit training program and will start the NFPA 1001 Level I Fire Fighter Training Program.
**Personal and Professional Challenges**: Firefighting presents dynamic challenges that push you to grow both physically and mentally. The sense of accomplishment in overcoming these challenges is life-changing
**Compensation**: As a Paid-on-Call Recruit Firefighter, you will be compensated for responding to emergencies and participating in required training sessions.
**What You Will Do**:
In this role you will uphold the department’s motto of “Pride, Honor, Integrity while responding to emergency calls (following initial probationary period), as directed by your Lieutenant, or Captain. You will be responsible for ongoing training in emergency procedures and ensuring the maintenance and readiness of all firefighting equipment. A key part of your duties will be enforcing provincial, municipal and City health and safety regulations to protect both firefighters and the community.
**Requirements for Applicants**:
**Commitment**: Emergencies can happen 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Firefighters are required to attend a weekly two-hour training session on Thursday evenings and respond to emergency callouts when available.
**Physical and Mental Fitness**: Firefighting is physically and mentally demanding. Applicants must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Grade 12 education or equivalent
- Undergo a pre-employment medical examination based on National Fire Protections Association (NFPA) Standards
- Maintain a level of physical fitness required for the position
**Pre-Employment Requirements**:
- Provide a clean criminal record check
- Submit a driver’s abstract demonstrating safe and responsible driving behavior
- Possess First Aid CPR Certification or willingness to acquire
**Driver's License**:
- Hold and maintain a valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license
- Recruits will receive training to obtain a Class 3 license with an air brake endorsement
**Attendance at Weekly Training**:
- Fire practices are held every Thursdays from 7-9 pm
- Recruits will serve a one-year probationary period
Applicants should live within a 10km radius of the City of Wetaskiwin

Applicants are asked to submit a cover letter and resume no later than April 30, 2025. Please indicate in your cover letter if you are available to respond to emergencies during the daytime, evenings, nights, weekends and/or statutory holidays. Interviews for the position will be conducted after the closing of the position.
