The Firefighter Paramedic is diversely skilled and a key component of an integrated fire and emergency medical response system.
Under the supervision as determined by the department’s hierarchal structure, the Firefighter Paramedic is primarily responsible for protecting the public from the dangers of fire (structural and wildland) by controlling and putting out fires. They are also responsible for responding to other emergency situations including responding to medical calls, water rescue, vehicle rescue, technical rescue, and other rescue incidents. Firefighter Paramedics also respond to non-emergent calls such as assisting with patient lifts, or check well-being.
The position of Firefighter Paramedic is also responsible for providing medical services to the citizens of Winnipeg in accordance with approved provincial standards and established protocol, as determined by the department’s hierarchal structure and the Medical Director’s designated scope of practice. In all emergency situations, Firefighter Paramedics are responsible for pre-hospital care of injured persons (emergency paramedical services), maintaining/operating equipment, and completing all essential tasks in each emergency service job. Firefighter Paramedics are responsible for operating a wide variety of equipment and tools, both manual and power.
**As the** **_Firefighter Paramedic_** **you will**:
- Respond to emergent calls and is required to complete the following job duties as assigned or required within each shift.
- Attend to assigned calls immediately when dispatched.
- Monitor radio and pager for further information.
- Proceed to the scene in a safe and controlled manner in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act.
- Provide paramedical support at emergency scenes.
- Assume incident command when required as per department guidelines.
- Respond to emergent calls and is required to complete the following job duties as assigned or required within each shift.
- Manage fire rescues by controlling and extinguishing fires, protecting life and property connected to the rescue, and maintaining all necessary equipment.
- Responsible for medical tasks and delegating tasks to other firefighters in accordance with their scope of practice.
- Extricate victims from vehicles using extrication equipment.
- Assist community during natural disasters such as floods and tornados.
- Provide services involving all surface water rescue operations within the City of Winnipeg. Provide support on these calls until specialized units arrive on the scene.
- Respond to calls involving spills, accidents, disasters, criminal activities, and terrorist acts. Provide support on these calls until specialized units arrive on the scene.
- Provide rescue services as assigned or required such as specialty rescues including technical or high rescue.
- Respond to emergent calls.
- Required to investigate non-emergent calls such as assisting with patient lifts, or check well-being of patient.
- Complete and submit required reports and documentation in accordance with Departmental Standards and PHIA.
- Responsible for completing EMS reports as required on the scene.
- Carry out routine duties including the maintenance of equipment, vehicles, and station.
- Ensure all apparatus and equipment is in operating condition at the start of each shift and after each use.
- Complete station duties and maintenance as assigned (i.e. cleaning bathroom, sweeping and mopping floors, washing walls, snow shoveling, lawn mowing, etc.).
- Greet visitors, answer phones and taking run sheets.
- Maintain personal and professional skills and abilities to perform to expected standards.
- Participate in Department initiated Quality Improvement programs.
- Participate in regular skill-building sessions and training programs by attending lectures, exercises, practice drill sessions, and other forms of training.
- Maintain all required job-related licenses and competencies.
- Maintain a physical fitness level to perform job requirements.
- Adhering to department protocols, and using available opportunities to update and improve job-related knowledge, abilities, and skills.
- Participate in public education, emergency preparedness, and fire and life safety programs.
- Promote and participate in customer and community service programs endorsed by the department.
- Attend at public events and deliver public education and awareness programs.
- Perform community risk assessments and participate in developing response plans.
- Conduct building and property inspections as assigned.
- Establish and maintain the confidence of members of the public.
- To act as an integral part of both an emergency response and community safety team by working with and within the community.
- To prevent emergencies occurring, minimize their impact when they do and intervene effectively when required, to the benefit of that community and within a safe working environment.
