As a Planner in the Downtown Strategy business unit, you will be part of a dynamic and exciting team at The City of Calgary who are the stewards for downtown revitalization and the implementation of the overall downtown strategy. You will work closely with internal and external partners towards achieving the vision as set forth by the Greater Downtown Plan. You will be involved in a number of strategic planning initiatives and will work to identify, investigate and advance opportunities and regulatory improvements that support new investment, development and vibrancy in the downtown. Primary duties include:
- Conduct research and analysis and present strategic planning reports, business cases, policy & strategic documents.
- Provide guidance to external partners on development initiatives and opportunities.
- Coordinate and obtain input from Cross-Corporate partners and industry partners on new and ongoing downtown strategy initiatives.
- Support downtown BIAs and CAs as needed with respect to downtown strategy implementation.
- Undertake special projects and lead strategic initiatives within the Downtown Strategy portfolio of work.
- Support the ideation, planning and delivery of placemaking, programming, activation or tactical urbanism projects including capital investments, granting opportunities, and smaller operating collaborations.
- Respond to high priority issues, politically sensitive situations and customer service requests.
- **Qualifications**
A degree in Planning that is recognized by the Alberta Professional Planners Institute (APPI) or another provincial or territorial institute or association representing the Planning profession in Canada and at least 3 years of relevant planning experience; OR
- A degree in a Planning-related discipline, (such as Landscape Architect or Architect), and at least 4 years of related planning experience.
- Previous working experience in urban environment, experience in land use planning, project management, procurement, contract/consultation management, community program and event activations, placemaking and tactical urbanism will be considered assets.
- Demonstrated knowledge of planning policy and development review processes.
- Demonstrate experience working with consultants on project delivery, public realm improvements and/or capital projects.
- You are a strong communicator with excellent customer service skills and a demonstrated ability to undertake public engagement, build beneficial relationships, facilitate conflict resolution, and contribute to team goals.
- Success in this role requires a strong strategic and analytical thinker with a focus on change management.
