**Salary**: $2,881.03 to $ 3,776.62 bi-weekly ($75,194- $98,569 annually)
The Royal Alberta Museum (RAM) is the largest museum in western Canada and one of the top museums in Canada. Located in the Arts District in downtown Edmonton, we collect, preserve, research, interpret, and exhibit objects and specimens related to the heritage of Alberta's people and natural environment.
**Role Responsibilities**:
- The Royal Alberta Museum has an exciting opportunity for you to join our team as Curator Archaeology
Reporting to the Director of Curatorial and Research, the Curator of Archaeology stewards objects in the archaeological collections of the Royal Alberta Museum, while supervising staff in the Archaeology work unit. In this role and in support of the Historical Resources Act, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action as well as the Royal Alberta Museum's strategic framework and operational priorities, emphasis is placed on conveying in-depth and specialized knowledge of archaeological materials and sites representing thousands of years of Indigenous and non-Indigenous history in Alberta. This involves independent research, publication, development and preservation of collections, fieldwork, participation in exhibition development, public outreach, education and communication to ensure high-quality documentation of Alberta's archaeological heritage.
Some of the key responsibilities include:
1. Builds and maintains a collection of objects of historical, educational and scientific value as it pertains to the archaeology of Alberta within a regional context by:
- Curating objects generated through fieldwork, donations and research projects
- Promoting the museum as a repository for objects from avocational collectors
- Ensuring that newly-acquired materials are processed, catalogued and stored in an appropriate and timely manner and that they are appropriately documented.
2. Increases knowledge of archaeology in Alberta within a regional context through independent research by:
- Setting the strategic direction and goals of the archaeology research program to guide the planning of research proposals and the development of collections
- Designing and conducting independent research on archaeology and participating in interdisciplinary research projects with other related program areas
3. Communicates knowledge to inform and educate Albertans about archaeology by:
- Maintaining and providing access to database of information associated with objects in the archaeology collection
- Initiating plans and participating in the development of archaeology exhibits for the museum
- Assisting with the implementation of interpretive programs on archaeology and providing content for outreach initiatives
4. Identifies opportunities to further the museum's goals and strategic direction as they pertain to archaeology by:
- Networking with counterparts in Alberta and Canadian museums and universities to identify and develop archaeological research and collections related projects
- Seeking opportunities to collaborate with Indigenous and other communities on mutually identified projects relevant to them and sharing research products with the communities
5. Administration of financial and human resources to ensure delivery of quality programming by:
- Participating in yearly business planning and facility strategic planning to ensure that archaeology projects conform to the museum's goals and strategic direction
6. Supervises staff to ensure delivery of program products and services, to promote staff satisfaction and to maintain a safe working environment by:
- Supervising, training, coaching and evaluating permanent, wage, contract and volunteer staff to achieve the archaeology program's goals and carry out research in meeting permit obligations
