**Health Care Assistant - Part Time (Evenings and Weekends)
Tsawwassen First Nation (TFN) is a proud Coast Salish nation with our land base situated
in Tsawwassen, B.C. In 2009, the Tsawwassen First Nation Final Agreement came into
effect - this treaty was the first modern urban treaty in BC and the first treaty to be
successfully negotiated through the BC Treaty Commission process. The Treaty provides
us municipal, provincial and federal types of jurisdiction over a land base of 724 hectares.

Tsawwassen First Nation also became a full member of Metro Vancouver, the first First
Nation to do so. We are now going through a period of revival and renewal as we plan our
future and seek opportunities to sustain our growth physically, economically, and
culturally, for present and future generations.

TFN has an exciting and immediate full-time opportunity for a Health Care Provider to join
our Health & Social Services (HSS). The Health Care Provider assists clients with
activities of daily living and personal care to promote maximum independence to prevent
the placement of clients away from their homes. All duties are to be carried out in a
respectful and culturally safe manner and in accordance with the legislation and
regulations of the Tsawwassen First Nation, under the direction of the Manager of Health
and Social Services.

The Health Care Provider will be part of the HSS Department, reporting directly to the
Manager of Health and Social Services but will take day to day direction from the Home
and Community Care Nurses. The Health Care Provider will also work cooperatively with
other HSS team members. The Health Care Provider will establish and maintain effective
working relationships with clients, other staff, community members, government
representatives and contractors.

**Specific Responsibilities
- Working in clients’ homes, assist clients with all aspects of daily life, including

personal hygiene such as dressing, grooming, wearing aids (glasses, hearing,
prosthesis); bathing/showering, incontinence care, skin care, nail and hair care.

- Assist clients with rest and mobilization such as to sit up, transfer or lift, walk or

ambulate in wheelchair/therapeutic chairs; positioning in bed, wheelchair,
therapeutic chair and commode.
- Assist and enables clients to perform activities that promote client participation in

community/elder activities.
- Assists Community Care Nurse in developing and implementing client care plans.
- Preform light housekeeping duties including sweeping, vacuuming (does not include

moving furniture or items out of way), dusting, and laundry to maintain the efficient
upkeep and healthy environment of the home.
- Transporting clients to doctor’s appointments and other medical appointments.
- Assisting clients in getting groceries and home/personal care items.
- Changing bandages, checking vital signs and assisting with medication

management (ensuring clients are taking medications on time and in ways
required).
- Assist in getting adaptive equipment necessary and making recommendations on

equipment needed.
- Observes clients’ behaviour and overall health, including appearance and condition

of client, and reports any changes to the Community Care Nurse and HSS
Manager.
- Reports any unsafe conditions or encounters in a client’s condition and/or living

arrangements to the HSS Manager and Community Care Nurse.
- Observes any issues of elder abuse that reports them to HSS Manager and

Community Care Nurse.
- Build and maintain a network of positive working relationships with other TFN

departments and outside service providers to ensure effective referrals and a good
continuum of care.
**Working Conditions**

physically and mentally fit as the position requires lifting. The position is a minimum of 30
hours per week and can go up to 37.5 hours depending on client load. Travel and
overnight stays are required when needed. The hours and days of work may change
based on operational needs or to meet the health and wellness needs of the community.

**Qualifications
- Current registration in the BC Care Aide and Community Health Worker Registry.
- A minimum certification as a Health Care Assistant. Applicants who are Licensed
- Practical Nurses or higher qualifications will be considered.- A minimum of two years’ experience working with vulnerable adults, Elders or
- Indigenous adults.- Demonstrated experience establishing rapport and working effectively with
- Indigenous adults, and clients.- Current certification in Food Safe, First Aid and CPR, and WHIMIS; must be willing
- to obtain certification if provided the opportunity.- Must have strong written and oral communications skills, including the ability to
