**About the Opportunity**:
**General Manager, Dalhousie Student Union (DSU)**

**Position purpose**:
As the senior full time staff member, the General Manager works as a liaison between Council, Executive and the full and part time-time staff to provide efficient, student-focused services and facilities. Under the direction of the DSU Officers of the Union, the General Manager manages the day-to-day operations of the services, programs and facilities provided to the Dalhousie student body within the Dalhousie Student Union Building.

**Principle Responsibilities**

**Planning and Policy**
- Report weekly, or when necessary, to the Officers to ensure that the DSU bylaws, regulations, policies, and Executive directives are effectively followed and implemented.
- Work closely with the DSU Officers on short and long-term strategy and planning for facilities, programs, and services, including the investigation of new business opportunities.
- Ensure the proper policies and procedures are in place for efficient operations and provide input into policy development for Council as requested.
- Report to the DSU Officers on key activity areas.

**Human Resource Management**
- Ensure the organization is properly staffed and structured.
- Effectively lead, manage, and motivate direct reports and, indirectly, part-time employees.
- Ensure that performance is assessed on an on-going basis and that corrective action is taken to address performance issues.
- Ensure all staff is properly trained and skilled to carry out their responsibilities.
- Maintain and monitor all full-time staff vacation and sick banks.
- Where necessary, draft, update and advise of any changes required to any human resource policies such as hiring/dismissal, training, staff relations, attendance and payroll, while ensuring compliance with applicable laws and DSU bylaws.

**Contract Administration**
- Manage external and internal contracted service agreements, which include things like the fee agreement with the University, food services, beverage agreements, health plan, etc.
- Ensure terms and conditions are of maximum benefit to the student union.
- Ensure the required support and research is available to DSU Officers in contract negotiations.

**Financial Management**

Working with the VP Finance and Operations and the Controller, the General Manager is responsible for:

- Aiding in the budget preparation and monitoring, including advising department heads on their budgets.
- Capital project management.
- Maintaining banking arrangements.
- Ensuring adequate insurance and liability coverages are in place.
- Overseeing investment portfolio managers to ensure maximum returns.

**Other**
- Act as the DSU Liquor Administrator.
- Maintain and seek out linkages to external organizations such as Amiccus-C.
- Administer liability insurance for societies and organizations funded by DSU.
- Ensure the building, operations and services are well-managed.
- Ensure all risk management principles and practices are adhered to.

**Qualifications**:
**People Skills**: The General Manager is responsible for both the full and part-time staff of the DSU. They must have the capacity to work with many diverse people on a variety of issues. They must possess the ability to negotiate, listen, compromise, and provide direction to a variety of stakeholders.

**Leadership**: It is essential that the General Manager have the necessary skills to manage and lead a dynamic team to peak performance.

**Business Experience**: The overall management of the services, programs, and facilities of the DSU requires an individual who possesses solid business skills in the areas of strategic management, operations, human resource management, accounting, and marketing.

**Reporting Structure**:
This position reports directly to the DSU Officers.
