**JOB SUMMARY**

This position lays pipe for storm or sanitation sewers, drains, water mains, utilities and other civil infrastructure functions. This individual performs any combination of the following tasks: grade trenches or culverts, position pipe or seal joints. In addition to laying pipe, this individual also works with Laborers to dig trenches for/around existing utilities.

**ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Configure and lay out pipe routes, following written instructions or blueprints, and coordinate layouts with Supervisors and Gradesmen;
- Dig trenches to required depths, by hand or using machine trenching tools;
- Grade and level trench bases, using tamping machines and hand tools;
- Cut pipes to required lengths;
- Align and position pipes to prepare them for welding or sealing;
- Connect pipe pieces and seal joints, using welding equipment, cement or glue;
- Seal exposed pipe joints and fittings;
- Tap and drill holes into pipes to introduce auxiliary lines or devices;
- Fill and seal pipe trenches;
- Check slopes for conformance to requirements, using levels or lasers;
- Cover pipes with earth or other materials;
- Install and use instruments such as lasers, grade rods and transit levels;
- Operate mechanized equipment such as pickup trucks, rollers, tandem dump trucks, front-end loaders and backhoes;
- Locate existing pipes needing repair or replacement, using magnetic or radio indicators; and
- Train others in pipe-laying, and provide supervision as needed.

**RECOMMENDED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS**

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

**Education and/or Experience**
- Proven work experience as a Pipe Layer;
- Certification in pipelaying or one year of experience in the field is preferred;
- Detailed knowledge of construction and pipe fitting techniques;
- Knowledge of various pipe systems, storm drains, water mains, etc.;
- Experience with machine-operated trenching tools;
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings and maps;
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work professionally on a Crew;
- Commitment to safety; and
- Advanced knowledge of tool & equipment safety.

**Certifications and/or Licensing Requirements**
- Valid Driver’s License
- Required Company or Regulatory Certifications
- Required Company Safety Certifications

- Frequently exposed to work environment that consist of elevated noise level.
