**The Opportunity**

The Parks and Forestry Branch is part of the City of Barrie’s Operations Department. The Branch is responsible for the management, maintenance, and ongoing care of over 3,100 acres of waterfront, parkland and open space including 127 parks and 145 kilometers of trails. Services include horticulture displays and maintenance, turf management, shoreline maintenance, maintenance of parks amenities such as playgrounds, play courts, picnic shelters, and spray pads, waste collection, landscape construction, City's outdoor rink program, greenhouse operations, trails maintenance, and winter snow removal operations.

Under the general guidance and direction of the Horticulture Foreperson, the Gardener position is responsible for the maintenance of all the annual and perennial plants in the City of Barrie. Specifically, this position performs and oversees staff in the planting, pruning, cultivating, watering and fertilizing of flower beds located in the City’s parks,downtown areas, reverse lot frontages and right of ways. Additionally, this position performs greenhouse maintenance duties in accordance with seasonal requirements. Overall, this position plays an integral role in the upkeep of the City’s parks and other outdoor areas by carrying out horticultural activities and maintaining the City’s gardens.

**Education**(degree/diploma/certifications)
- Two (2) year College Diploma in Horticulture or related discipline
- Position Equivalency Code: C

**Experience**
- Two (2) years of horticultural experience performing duties related to the above mentioned major responsibilities

**Knowledge/Skill/Ability**
- General knowledge of greenhouse operations including propagation and growing techniques
- Working knowledge of parks and horticulture and irrigation operating systems
- Demonstrated ability to work in a physically demanding environment, including the ability to lift up to 25 kg

**Conditions of Employment**
- Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s Licence in good standing
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check*

**Other Important Information**

**Location**: Operations Center, 165 Ferndale Drive North, Barrie, Ontario

**Hours**: The normal hours of work are 40 hours per week in accordance with the Collective Agreement.

**Wage**: This position is within the CUPE Local 2380 Bargaining Unit with the following pay level and 2025 pay range:

- Pay Level: Level 5
- Yearly Salary: $67,371.20 to $80,683.20
- Hourly Pay Rate: $32.39 to $38.79
