**KEY OPPORTUNITIES & CHALLENGES**
As a **Junior / Intermediate Environmental Scientist**, reporting to the Vice President, Environmental, the successful applicant will be responsible for planning and carrying out field assessment and data collection exercises and presenting your findings in reports. Travel and field work is required for this role. This is an hourly position and remuneration will be reflective of years of experience.
- Working individually and in a team setting in a demanding consulting environment
- Assist with budget preparation, tracking costs, and providing project status updates, with a focus on field work and reporting for Phase 1 and 2 Environmental Site Assessments, site remediation, contamination management, pre and post construction assessments (soils, vegetation, topography, etc.), risk mitigation & management, spill assessments and response, waste characterization / management, groundwater monitoring, and decommissioning and abandonments including SCVF and gas migration surveys
- Coordinating with project technicians, scientists, contractors, and other field personnel to complete on-site environmental project tasks in the field
- Preparing and adhering to site-specific health and safety plans to mitigate or eliminate risks to you, West's clients, employees and the public
- Planning and conducting local and remote field work as directed on a diverse range of sites including groundwater monitoring and sampling, soil sampling, site assessments, vapour sampling and groundwater well installations, subcontractor supervision, or office assignments under the direction of Project Management personnel
- Collection of field data and detailed documentation
- Communication with client representatives, project managers, team leads and technical staff
- File compilation, organization of field data, interpretation of laboratory results and assisting in preparation of technical reports
- Perform other responsibilities associated with this position as may be appropriate.
**QUALIFICATIONS**
- A minimum of one year or more of environmental experience
- University degree or technical diploma in an environmental, engineering, or related discipline
- QAES, QWSP or CPESC certification would be considered an asset
- Wildlife and / or wetland survey experience would be considered an asset
- Comprehension / familiarity with the Canadian Soil Classification System and / or the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS)
- SST training would be considered an asset
- Self-motivated and will demonstrate strong time management
- A positive and enthusiastic attitude, willingness to learn and the ability to work with little supervision
- Understanding of current provincial and federal regulatory remediation guidelines and directives
- Willingness and ability to travel for extended periods to various locations
- Ability to multi-task and coordinate multiple field programs
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with particular attention to detail and accuracy of field notes
- Ability to work effectively with multi-disciplinary project teams
- Must possess a valid Class 5 Driver's License (unrestricted)
- Valid Standard First Aid CPR‐C certification
- Ground Disturbance Level II, TDG and H2S Alive certification is considered an asset
