Vancouver, Canada UBC Hiring Solutions Full time

This is a one-year term contract with possibility of extension.

**Job Summary**

The Stewart Blusson Quantum Matter Institute at UBC (Blusson QMI) is a world-leading venture advancing research into solid state systems and phenomena that explicitly involve quantum mechanics. Among its core areas of expertise are the development of materials hosting novel quantum electronic states, and measurement of nanoscale electronic and photonic structures built from these materials, whose device characteristics display remarkable new paradigms of operation.

Blusson QMI has invested heavily on acquiring state-of-the-art fabrication tools, including a two-photon 3D lithography tool, an electrical wire bonder, an Electron Beam Lithography tool, and an inductively-coupled plasma etcher. The Nanofabrication Technician is responsible for the operation of a number of fabrication processes, including but not limited to these newly acquired tools, with the aim of delivering consistent and reliable service. To this end, the post holder, who should already have experience in lithography, micro/nano-fabrication, and process development, will plan and deliver micro/nano-fabrication solutions for a number of different stakeholders. The individual is expected to work independently, with a proactive and creative spirit and in close collaboration with colleagues, in order to deliver what is required of the role.

The post holder also has a duty to ensure that all tasks conducted within Blusson QMI labs are performed in a safe manner that conforms to current legislation and workplace protocols.

Project details:
SiEPICfab is a consortium consisting of approximately ten industrial partners and three universities. The goal of SiEPICfab is to conduct research in and to fabricate leading-edge silicon photonic (SiP) devices and photonic integrated circuits (PICs), and to make its manufacturing accessible to Canadian and international academics and industry. Our aims, in collaboration with industry partners, are two-fold: 1) Scientific and Engineering: we will research new nanofabrication techniques and processes and scale up the fabrication to 200 mm wafers, develop new models, and solve industrial problems. 2) Translational: our industrial Foundry partners will offer fabrication as a service to external clients, based on SiEPICfab processes development during the project.

The Canada Centre Refined Manufacturing and Acceleration Process (ReMAP) is a network of small and large industry partners, research organizations, and academic institutions whose aim is to build a product enablement supply chain for growth and innovation.

Working with our industrial partners, the technician will operate equipment, develop new nanofabrication processes, and perform prototyping services.

**Organizational Status**
The Nanofabrication Technician reports to Lukas Chrostowski, the Principal Investigator in charge of the SiEPICfab project. The post holder will work independently and pro-actively, and will be often required to use the Blusson QMI cleanroom and to collaborate closely with researchers.

**Work Performed**

The Nanofabrication Technician will be responsible for performing processes on a number of equipment, including the Vanguard Automation SONATA1000, TPT Wire Bonder, JEOL8100FS 100 keV Electron Beam Lithography tool, the Heidelberg MLA150 optical lithography tool, and the Cobra ICP thin-film silicon etcher. The technician will use other packaging processes including wafer dicing, electrical wire bonding, attaching chips on carriers, and encapsulating them. The technician will follow process fabrication procedures in the fabrication of micro/nano-structured devices; produce documents to manage the development of devices and processes; and develop and qualify new processes to meet requirements.

The working hours of this position will vary, but will occasionally be during evenings after 5PM and weekends.

The following items reflect the most important tasks associated with the post. The list is not complete and may change as the role evolves with time. The technician:

- Plans and delivers nanofabrication process work for the realization of micro
- and nano-structured devices, using techniques that include, but are not limited to, two-photon lithography, electrical wirebonding, electron-beam lithography, photolithography, wet and dry etching, physical and chemical vapour deposition, metrology, and device testing.
- Works on a number of different projects, that includes internal and external stakeholders and industrial partners.
- Carries out processing of existing and new nano/micro-fabrication and packaging techniques.
- Monitors the performance of processes to ensure that these processes remain operational and perform to specifications.
- Offers time, skills and expertise to other Blusson QMI labs and projects, as instructed by the Director, Nanofabrication Facilities, and performs other tasks relevant to the job tasks, as required.
- Interact
