**Job Synopsis**
The goal of the full-time Community Engagement and Outreach Associate is to foster a safe and supportive environment for all tenants, staff, volunteers, and guests of 50 Kent Avenue in Kitchener by responding to disruptions and distress with compassion and professionalism.
Reporting to MCC Ontario’s Walking with People in Poverty Program Coordinator, the Associate is part of the Poverty team and works in close collaboration with the part-time Community Engagement & Outreach Associate, staff in MCC Thrift on Kent, Facilities, Administration, and other tenants at 50 Kent. This is a programmatic role with two primary focuses:
1. In-the-moment response to crisis situations, safety concerns, and disruptive behaviour within the 50 Kent building, including, but not limited to, the Thrift Shop.
2. Proactive relationship-building with individuals who frequently access the building, as well as with local KW agencies to support referral pathways, community-based solutions, and long-term engagement.
This role is based at MCC Ontario’s 50 Kent Avenue location, with flexible hours required to align with peak operating times for MCC Thrift on Kent and broader building activity.

**Qualifications**
Required
- Proven competence in handling front-line crisis and de-escalation
- Experience working with people struggling with mental health and addictions issues, approaching each situation with a pleasant and professional demeanor and a peace-building lens
- Willingness and ability to work with sensitivity within a diverse cultural and theological milieu
- Networking, relationship, and partnership building skills including establishing rapport and trust
- Experience and comfort in coaching and training to build related skills and capacity among MCC Ontario staff
- Solid administrative and organizational skills - proficient in MS Office suite, ability to track and document activities and progress with various case files over time, ability to work independently and prioritize a wide variety of tasks, excellent oral and written communication in English
- High regard for, and understanding of, the need for respect and discretion in dealing with confidential information
- Ability to work a rotational schedule - daytime, evening, and weekend hours as scheduled in advance
- Bachelor’s degree + 2-4 years of experience in an applicable human/social services field. An additional 5+ years experience will be considered in place of a bachelor’s degree.
Preferred
- Experience with peacebuilding through systems and relationship
- Completed some or all the following: Standard First Aid / CPR certification, Nonviolent Crisis Intervention and Prevention (NVC), Naloxone training, Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), trauma awareness training
- Knowledge of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design concepts (CPTED)
- Familiarity with community services and supports available in the Kitchener Waterloo area that provide supports to people who are homeless, street involved, and/or struggling with mental health and addiction issues
**Key Responsibilities**
Security & Crisis Response
- Be a calm, visible presence in the building during high-needs times (including evenings and Saturdays), particularly in MCC Thrift on Kent, building trust with individuals who frequent the 50 Kent building and are, or may cause, security challenges due to their behaviour.
- Respond to crisis calls within and around the building with a primary emphasis on the main floor - atrium, MCC Thrift on Kent, and tenants. Assess safety risks in real time for all individuals involved and call emergency services (Police, EMS) when necessary.
- Liaise regularly with staff from MCC Thrift on Kent, Facilities, and Administration to stay current on emerging security needs and challenges at 50 Kent.
- Work collaboratively with Facilities and MCC Thrift on Kent to develop, refine and implement violence prevention and response protocols for staff and volunteers.
- Support peacebuilding, crisis intervention, de-escalation, and related training within MCC, developing and leading training sessions for staff and volunteers on appropriate security, de-escalation and peace-building protocols and skills.
