Serving the Saanich Peninsula located just north of Victoria, BC, the district has one of the highest graduation rates in the province and a student body that consistently scores well on annual assessment tests, thanks in large part to the dedication and efforts of our 900 teaching and support staff.

**Position** - Continuing Teacher

**Assignment Type** - Continuing

**FTE/Point Time** - 0.2 Point Time

This literacy support position is located at ḰELSET. Schedule may be flexible.

**Qualifications**

All postings require:

- A valid BC Teaching Certificate
- Commitment to support the full range of student abilities
- Effective communication skills with students, parents and colleagues
- Commitment to continuing professional development
- Successful experience with adapting and modifying materials for a diversity of learners
- Working knowledge of using computing technology to support learning
- A commitment to the Principles of Inclusive Schools and Principles of Learning

Specific to this posting:

- Bachelor of Education (Elementary)
- Two years successful classroom experience at the elementary**level
- Knowledge of local Saanich Indigenous Communities
- Significant leadership experience, preferably in relation to developing and enhancing Indigenous community and cultural awareness
- Demonstrated successful experience acting as a role model for and working with Indigenous students supporting them in literacy, numeracy and the development of learning and life skills
- Demonstrated proficiency in developing connections and partnerships with Indigenous Communities and raising cultural awareness in school
- Effective communication skills, demonstrated through positive relationships with students, staff, parents/guardians and the community
- Strong administrative skills to manage the ongoing documentation processing requirements associated with the Indigenous Support Program

Preference will be given to those applicants who:

- have a minimum of 2 years classroom teaching experience from Kindergarten to Grade 5;
- have literacy intervention training, skills and experience at the primary level
- have thorough knowledge of the redesigned curriculum with integration of Indigenous Worldviews and Perspectives;
- ability to successfully model proven Indigenous perspectives and methodologies using the First Peoples Principles of Learning;
- ability to demonstrate strong leadership in all areas of Indigenous Education;
- knowledge of the W?SÁNE? culture, local protocols, and current issues of concern to persons of Indigenous ancestry, including members of the W?SÁNE? Nation and those of other First Nations, Métis, and Inuit backgrounds;
- readiness to work as a member of the Indigenous Education team including working with Elementary classroom teachers, Indigenous Support Staff, District Teacher Leaders, District Staff and Committees;
- are willing to work in a collaborative/team environment;
- have training/experience and be willing to use Quality Assessment practices
- ability to communicate and work effectively with students, parents, and community agencies
