JOB TITLE: Settlement Worker in Schools (SWIS) / Settlement Practitioner
WORK LOCATION: Campbell River
REPORTS TO: Settlement Coordinator
WORKING HOURS: 35 hours per week
COMPENSATION: $27 - $30 per hour. Based on MISA Wage Grid, Level 5
This role combines the responsibilities of a Settlement Worker in Schools and a Settlement Worker in our Campbell River Office.
The Settlement Worker in Schools (SWIS) supports newcomer children, youth, and their families attending SD72 schools by delivering settlement and engagement services that foster social, emotional, and academic integration. This role helps students and families navigate the school system and connect with resources, ensuring a smooth transition into their new learning environment.
The Settlement Practitioner in the Campbell River office provides direct settlement services to newcomers of all ages and backgrounds. This role offers support through individual and group sessions, including needs assessments, referrals, and orientation to Canadian society. While both components involve supporting newcomers, the SWIS role focuses on school-aged children and youth within educational settings, while the Settlement Practitioner serves a broader population in the community.
KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (SWIS)
The SWIS Settlement Worker liaises closely with School District 72 staff and MISA Settlement staff to support students and their families. This role requires collaboration with the school district and may involve working offsite at a school location up to 60% of the time.
School-Based Newcomer SupportProvide direct settlement services to newcomer students and their families using a coordinated case management approach.Deliver culturally sensitive and linguistically appropriate support.Participate in student and family reception and orientation processes.Offer orientation sessions on available school and community programs and services.Conduct outreach to immigrant and newcomer families to build trust and engagement.Facilitate newcomer participation in school activities, committees, and associations.Help families access school resources and support services.Support families in advocating for their children's education and overall integration.
School Relationship & Program CoordinationFoster constructive and culturally sensitive communication among school staff, students, and families.Help initiate contact with newcomer families and maintain consistent follow-up.Provide cultural context and background information to school staff as needed.Assist with youth-focused workshops that promote understanding of the education system and parenting in Canada.Facilitate after-school and enrichment programs that foster student engagement and social inclusion.Maintain professional communication and contribute to regular reports and documentation.
KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (SETTLEMENT PRACTITIONER)
The Settlement Practitioner supports adult and family clients at MISA’s Campbell River office. This role delivers community-based settlement services that empower newcomers to integrate into Canadian life.
Client-Centred Settlement SupportConduct client intake and determine eligibility in collaboration with the Intake Worker.Assess client needs, barriers, and goals; create personalized settlement plans.Provide information about Canadian society, rights, responsibilities, and community expectations.Educate service providers about language and cultural barriers affecting newcomer access.
