Reporting to the Deputy Chief, Operations - Paramedic Services and participating as a member of the Emergency Services management team. The Duty Superintendent will manage day-to-day Paramedic Services operations to ensure that structures, programs, systems and processes meet all requirements set out in legislation, policy, procedure and standards.
**Role and Responsibilities**:
Maintain operational functions on their assigned shift:
- Actively staff ambulance sites as per approved staffing pattern, using an established schedule.
- Visit and inspect each ambulance base and post on a routine and non-routine basis.
- Investigate and report all accidents and incidents involving emergency response vehicles as per legislative and policy requirements.
- Maintain equipment and vehicles needed for operations by reporting discrepancies to the Deputy Chief.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders.
- Cover other management positions as required.
- Provide pre-hospital care to the sick and injured.
- Implement operational and organizational goals, objectives and performance standards.
- Initiate incident/accident and special circumstances investigations.
- Undertake the role of the Paramedic Services Incident Commander in Multi-Casualty Incidents and Integrated Emergency Management
- Assist in the development and maintenance of the Emergency Plan for Paramedic Services
Supervise Staff within an assigned district, ensuring that applicable legislation, policy and procedures are followed.
- Perform daily supervision and leadership to Paramedics.
- Monitor the quality of patient care, report discrepancies to the Deputy Chief, of Professional Standards
- Take the necessary steps to correct and improve any deficiency regarding staff.
- Identify staff development and training needs to the Deputy Chief
- Review, audit and ensure that Ambulance Call Reports are completed and when required, distributed as per Ambulance Services Documentation Standards.
- Maintain, explain, and implement organizational policy and procedures.
- Work with the Paramedic Services Management team to resolve issues that require discipline and/or remedial action.
- Complete performance development evaluations in conjunction with the Management team.
- Intervene directly as an advocate in the day-to-day communications between Paramedics and Central Ambulance Communications Centres.
- Assist and intervene as a liaison between Paramedics and stakeholders.
- Notify CACC of any accident or other incident involving an emergency response vehicle that may limit the availability of the vehicle to respond to a request for service
- Responsible for the safety and well-being of staff and patients, ensuring that all regulations, guidelines, legislation etc, are followed. (i.e. Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, Occupational Health & Safety Act)
Maintain material and human resources within the County of Huron:
- Monitor and provide the Deputy Chief or designate with staff qualifications, to ensure that qualifications meet legislated standards.
- Report discrepancies in material resources and human resources to the Deputy Chief - Paramedic Services or designate
- Ensure that emergency response vehicles and equipment meet and are not modified from legislated standards.
- Communicate with CACC to ensure that the complement of strength and the organizational deployment strategy is met.
- Perform preventative maintenance duties and authorize repairs to ensure vehicles and equipment are maintained.
Assist with operational planning:
- Participate and provide reports in meetings, conferences, and workshops.
- Perform directives and instructions in a timely and efficient manner.
- Assist with formulating organizational Policies and Procedures.
- Review reports, studies, publications and other sources of information in order to remain current in principles, practices and new developments in the Paramedic Services field.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of developments in legislation, provincial policy directives, economic and social patterns, and technological development affecting areas of responsibility
- Assist with the selection, maintaining, planning, procuring, allocating/assigning, upgrading, de-commissioning and disposal of material resources
- Assist Deputy Chief with departmental Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) program as directed
