**Location -**This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person. Work primarily takes place at North Campus, Edmonton.

**Position**

Reporting to the Manager, Regulatory and Consulting Services the Radiation Safety Officer (officer) works with faculty and staff across all U of A campuses to assess and promote radiation, laser and x-ray emitting device safety practices and health, safety and environmental management systems. The officer works as part of the team of health and safety professionals in the Regulatory and Consulting Services (RCS) team of the Department of Health, Safety and Environment (HSE). RCS works closely with University staff, including academic researchers and their staff, facilities and operations personnel and administrative staff across all U of A campuses. The officer will have specific professional competencies in the areas of radiation and laser safety under the direction of the Manager, RCS.

**Duties**
- Administer and improve the institutional radiation, x-ray and laser safety programs and related licenses, permits, inspections and registrations
- Act as key institutional lead, taking on designated RSO and Laser Safety Officer (LSO) roles, with regulators including the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), Health Canada and the Radiation Program within Alberta Occupational Health and Safety
- Act as the designated radiation equipment Registration agency administrator and manager of the Inspection agency, responsible for x-ray and laser device inspections and authorization of other persons as inspectors
- Author and maintain various radiation, x-ray and laser safety training programs and codes of practice, and other related guidance documents
- Lead incident investigations, radiation, x-ray and laser exposure assessments and inspections and health, safety and environment improvement projects
- Participate in on-call services and respond to incidents and emergencies
- Oversee compliance with federal and provincial radiation, x-ray and laser safety legislation and related licensing, permitting, inspection and registration requirements
- Collaborate with, support and advise clients, the HSE Leadership Team, and other HSE team members as required
- Develop, maintain and audit required files, databases, documents and records
- Act as main HSE liaison and support for the U of A Radiation Safety Committee and Laser Safety Committee
- Participate in Culture of Care and Organizational Culture Initiatives
