**Main Purpose and Function**
The Superintendent, Park Rangers is responsible for managing the day-to-day operation of the Park Ranger program. The position manages the Park Ranger human, financial and other resources in order to enhance operational efficiencies within the framework of related Park Board and City Policies, applicable collective agreements and community partnerships. A key responsibility of the position includes the establishment of a Safety Culture, upholding workplace occupational health and safety responsibilities and related training and development.
The Superintendent is responsible for managing staff while ensuring the work is completed in an efficient and cost effective manner. The Superintendent exercises considerable independent judgment and initiative, including providing expertise to other divisions and participating in the development of policies and long-range plans.
**Specific Duties/Responsibilities**
- Enhances operational efficiencies, manages and coordinates the day-to-day operation of the Park Ranger team.
- Strategically plans, schedules, prioritizes and manages the Park Ranger team responsible for, but not limited to: providing park visitor information and wayfinding; educating the public about park conservation, regulations, and by-laws; monitoring City-wide recreation activities in parks; monitoring and maintaining order and safety in parks; performing needle sweeps; protecting and securing park facilities, amenities and natural assets; monitoring and supporting special events.

- Establishes work processes and procedures
- Responds to concerns submitted via 3-1-1, VanConnect, and other citizen feedback channels.
- Establishes and maintains effective communication and coordination among staff, with other divisions and departments in the Park Board, the City, consultants, and contractors; with different levels of government, outside agencies, not for profit organizations, associations and the general public.
- Participates in several groups and committees responsible for improving Parks facilities, and the service offered to the public
- Ensures operational area activities are aligned Park Board and City strategic objectives
- Develops, maintains and monitors service levels and resourcing plans for area of responsibility.
- Leads projects to drive continuous improvement through an understanding of best practises with a focus on increasing efficiency, enhancing worker safety and engagement and improving quality of services.
- Builds relationships with customers and clients to improve service levels and increase customer satisfaction
- Participates in Park Board team meetings, conducts staff meetings and presents crew talks.
- Provides leadership to staff, including hiring and termination, discipline, performance and attendance management, coaching, training, development and guidance. Represents the employer in the grievance process.
- Performs crew audits to ensure compliance with safety, environmental and quality standards
- Provides coaching on a timely basis; develops and communicates goals, Park Board and City policies, sets workplace expectations, identifies training and development needs.
- Provides oversight of applicable OH&S technical and administrative requirements while promoting a safety culture within the workgroup.
- Meets with employees to resolve disputes. Administers discipline in consultation with Supervisor and HR advisors. Enforces and collective agreement provisions, hears grievance meetings at Step 1 of the grievance process and consults with superiors and HR to resolve grievances at that Step.
