If you want a patient-centered focus and think this is the workplace for you, we are looking for casual Emergency Admitting Clerks to join our Emergency Departments at St. Paul's and Mount St. Joseph Hospitals.

Providence Health Care provides a range of coordinated emergency, inpatient, outpatient, specialized diagnostic and treatment services and provincial services for people with serious mental illnesses, including those with addictions.
**Where we are located**
St. Paul's Hospital is an acute care, teaching and research hospital located in downtown Vancouver. It is home to many world-class medical and surgical programs, including heart and lung services, HIV/AIDS, mental health, emergency, critical care, kidney care, elder care and numerous surgical specialties.
Mount Saint Joseph is an acute care community hospital and long-term care home. It offers emergency services, acute care, ambulatory care services and a full range of diagnostic services. In addition, it is home to a 99-bed extended care unit for elderly residents.
**Position Overview**
Reporting to the Patient Resident Care Manager or designate, the Emergency Admitting Clerk:
- performs a variety of duties related to the admission, transfer, and discharge of patient's to/from the hospital
- collects information and enters patient demographic and insurance information into a computerized system such as Admission Transfer Discharge (ADT) Computer system
- explains consent forms, fee for services, and hospital policies to patients or delegate and witnesses signatures on forms
- generates bed booking options and communicates information to senior staff who will make decisions on bed assignments
- receives patient valuables for temporary storage, collects payments, reconciles accounts and issues receipts
- performs a variety of clerical and reception duties such as maintaining filing systems, photocopying, filing and answering general inquiries from the public, staff, patients, and physicians.
Qualifications / Skills and Education:
**Important**:
To qualify for this position, you must have good knowledge of medical terminology, and be able to type 40 words per minute. Knowledge and speed will be tested.
You must also have recent relevant clerical experience.
Finally, you must be available to work days and nights, 2-3 days per week. All emergency clerks work 12-hour shifts, on rotation.
**Education**
Grade 12, plus two (2) year's recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
**Skills and Abilities**
Ability to keyboard 40 wpm (will be tested)
Knowledge of medical terminology (will be tested)
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
Ability to deal with others effectively
Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position
Ability to organize work. Ability to operate related equipment
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Interviews patients or designate, in person or on the telephone, in order to obtain British Columbia Hospital Program and Medical Service Plan information required to determine eligibility for benefits and admit patient to hospital.
- Enters information into the Admitting, Discharge & Transfer (ADT) System in order to pre-admit, admit, transfer, or discharge patient.
- Searches the database for patient's Personal Health Number and ensures that it is active and enters active date in ADT System.
- Photocopies visa, immigration papers and other related documentation required for Hospital Program and Medical Service Plan eligibility.
- Obtains patient drug profiles from the database per established procedures.
- Generates patient admission related documentation such as admission form, identification bands, addressograph plate and Workers' Compensation Board forms as required.
- Enters patient visit information into the Patient Clinical Information System in order to capture visit activity.
