The Alberta Public Service (APS) is taking a One Finance approach to the delivery of financial services. Financial services include the delivery of financial planning, reporting and operations, as well as ongoing engagement with policy and program areas to provide strategic decision-making support. **Role Responsibilities**:
The Ministry of Public Safety and Emergency Services is looking to fill a Financial Analyst position within the Financial Services branch.
Reporting to the Financial Reporting and Analysis Manager, the Financial Analyst works as part of team responsible for the production of quarterly and annual financial statements and the coordination of the year end audit for the Ministry of Public Safety and Emergency Services (PSES). The Financial Analyst ensures the accuracy of financial transactions and balances through effective analysis/reconciliation, including identification and resolution of financial reporting issues.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Preparing monthly account reconciliations
- Creating/generating ad-hoc queries/reports to identify financial accounting issues and support the integrity of financial data
- Preparing accrual journal entries at year end and monitoring the disposition of accrued expenditures in the new fiscal year
- Preparing variance analysis on several income statement and balance sheet items
- Liaising with auditors to provide them with required documentation and/or explanations to facilitate the audit and resolve audit issues
- Generating the quarterly consolidation process in 1GX and communicating results to Treasury Board and Finance
- Monitoring the cash clearing process and funding activities for Ministry non-GRF business units on a regular basis
- Assisting with the implementation of various 1GX financial projects (e.g. reviewing business process, training, user acceptance testing, change management)

**Qualifications**:
Four-year university degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, Commerce, Management or other related field plus three years of related experience.
Equivalencies will be considered as outlined below:
- Related diploma plus five years directly related experience.
- Accounting designation and one-year additional related experience.
Required:
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Office, including Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint
- Experience working with relevant financial information systems, reporting tools and software (e.g., Excel, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) / System Analysis Program (SAP) and ability to manipulate data sets.
- Experience preparing, reviewing and presenting financial statements.
- Experience preparing briefing materials that translate financial data into meaningful information for decision makers.
Assets:
- Canadian professional accounting designation (CPA or legacy designation) or equivalent
- Knowledge of the Government of Alberta's applicable legislation (e.g., Financial Administration Act, Fiscal Planning and Transparency Act, Government Organizational Act and Alberta Pub
