Job Summary
The Sensitive Research Specialist leads the assessment of research data security and privacy needs to align, implement, and integrate complex research initiatives in the domain of advanced research computing (ARC). The position acts as a liaison, providing coordination between the ARC team, other departments, and external groups to support researchers.
Organizational Status
The Sensitive Research Specialist reports to the Manager, Sensitive Research. This position works within a team with likely overlap with similar portfolios and works independently on specific files. This position requires extensive contact with faculty, staff, and students' system wide as well as partner organizations and supports a diverse range of researchers and research groups.
This position works with other UBC departments at all campuses, sites and research institutes as well as partner organizations nationally and internationally; to provide researchers with access to state-of-the-art DRI system services required for computationally
- and data-intensive research. The position requires the Specialist to work closely with colleagues as well as technical, administrative (legal), and scientific staff to provide support for advanced research computing.
Work Performed
**Specific Duties**:
Provides multi-level support as it pertains to privacy issues for the large, interdisciplinary research
Provides input to the establishment of policies and procedures.
Consults and advises on applicable regulatory requirements and partner with community members to ensure compliance.
Consults and advises on relevant University policies and partner with community members to facilitate compliance.
Supports research groups through collaboration in data sharing and transfer agreements.
Provide compliance advice and expertise to Institutional Review Boards, UBC Legal Counsel, and researchers.
Works with other partner organizations to foster a local Community of Practice of privacy professionals at UBC, affiliated hospitals and research institutes.
Provides training, expert liaison, technical and administrative advice for researchers.
Demonstrates knowledge of commonly encountered regulations in large research environments including FIPPA, CPA, HIPAA, GDPR and other national and provincial regulations.
Advocates for the maintenance of appropriate privacy across all advanced research computing technologies and services supporting the humanities and social sciences research community.
Develop and implement privacy focused solutions to challenges relating to big data processing and data transfer of large data files.
Consults with faculty, technical staff, and vendors to assist in the design and privacy requirements of advanced research computing systems and storage used in data intensive research, including the maintenance, administration of big data, databases, and storage systems.
Write and maintains documentation in accordance with prescribed standards.

Analyzes research needs utilizing a structured requirements process (gathering, analyzing, documenting, and managing changes).
Identifies, elicits, and documents requirements, defines rules and communicates requirements for the implementation of solutions.
Conducts feasibility studies and drafts proposals for evaluation by appropriate users and managers.
Develops and assists in the presentation of business cases.
Leads short-term planning sessions to implement integrated process improvements and documents discussion and agreements.
Provides consultative services for the development of policies and procedures.
Analyzes metrics to ensure for client satisfaction.
