The City of Toronto's Fleet Services Division (FSD) provides a full range of fleet management services for City Divisions and Agencies. We direct the management of the City’s fleet including the acquisition, maintenance and disposal of assets; along with the City’s industry leading Green Fleet Plan and fuel management infrastructure. The City of Toronto has the largest municipal fleet in Canada and one of the most complex Fleets in North America.
**Major Responsibilities**:
- Diagnoses, identifies, troubleshoots and performs appropriate repairs, based on industry standards, to ensure vehicle systems function as prescribed by original manufacturer specifications.
- Maintains and repairs all vehicle cooling, heating and electrical systems.
- Utilizes various software and technologies to diagnose and repair various components including electric components, such as transmission systems, clutches, drive shafts, axle assemblies, final drives, differentials, brakes and steering systems, engine, fuel, intake, exhaust and emission control systems, ground engaging equipment and attachments with an emphasis on hydraulic and hydrostatic.
- Performs scheduled preventative maintenance and non-scheduled maintenance at the client division's yard or transfer station, including on-road and field support of various types of heavy equipment, trucks and attachments.
- Drives, tests and operates all vehicles and equipment to diagnose and confirm maintenance and repairs.
- Conducts visual inspections and audits equipment serviced by contractors as assigned, to measure the quality of repair and document observations.
- Performs inspections and repairs in compliance to Ministry Legislated inspections as per the National Safety Code, Ministry of Transportation regulations and standards and the Highway Traffic Act regulations.
- Documents inspection findings, maintenance repairs and other relevant data in the Fleet Management Information System (FMIS).
- Ensures inspections and maintenance repairs records are accurate and up to date.
- Identifies and orders required parts, fluids and materials necessary to effect repairs.
- Provides feedback on current vehicles and equipment and possible improvements.
- Welds broken parts, necessary to perform mechanical repairs to components, including fabrication as necessary.
- Maintains current industry knowledge, including emerging technologies, best practices, legislation and standards.
- Participates in training as required.
- Utilizes all tools and equipment necessary for effectively performing repairs, including hoists, cranes, power and hand tools.
- Works in compliance to OHSA and attends and participates in regular scheduled safety talks, meetings and initiatives.
- Provides training, works collaboratively and gives work direction to other staff and operators including other mechanics and apprentices.
**Key Qualifications**:
- Must possess and be able to maintain a current Certificate of Qualification with OCOT as a Class 421A Heavy Duty Equipment Technician in accordance with the regulations enforced in the Province of Ontario and the College of Trades.
- Must possess and be able to maintain Ozone depletion Prevention certificate (ODP).
- Must possess and be able to maintain a valid Province of Ontario, Class “D” Driver’s License with “Z” endorsement and must qualify for the City’s equipment operating permits.
- Extensive experience in all aspects of vehicle and equipment troubleshooting repair and preventative maintenance practices and standards with specific focus on pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
**You must also have**:
- Must possess and maintain relevant hand tools necessary to complete work.
- Ability to read and understand both electrical and hydraulic diagrams and schematics related to the equipment.
- Able to work at heights, on roadways, in open and exposed areas, and in all weather conditions.
- Able to communicate both verbally and in writing, at both a technical and non-technical level.
- Ability to perform work in a timely and efficient manner, consistent with industry standards.
- Must be familiar with relevant legislation such as: Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Highway Traffic Act, National Safety Standards, MTO and environmental regulations, etc.
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Fleet Management Information Systems (FMIS) such as M5.
- Experience accurately recording vehicle repair data.
