**The Opportunity**

We are seeking one (1) 1-year term, full-time Lead Horticulturalist who will be primarily responsible for leading high profile and/or specialty horticultural assignments within Assiniboine Park and Zoo. In addition, responsibilities include many elements of the day-to-day maintenance of horticultural aspects across Assiniboine Park; maintaining the quality standards of horticulture practice and aesthetics required of a public garden; and preserving the integrity of the approved Horticulture Master Plan. The successful applicant will work primarily out of the Greenhouse Facility with some additional duties in the Leaf as needed.

The incumbent will perform highly skilled horticultural work in the maintenance of a very diverse collection of plant material. Primary responsibilities include leading high profile and/or specialty horticultural assignments within Assiniboine Park and Zoo. These skills and responsibilities may include all factors required for producing quality plants for indoor/outdoor displays and all factors required for installing and maintaining quality indoor/outdoor displays. These responsibilities may require the incumbent to seed, divide, propagate, and transplant plant materials; carry out the operational functions of greenhouse production; and identify and mitigate pest control issues. Additionally the incumbent may be responsible to till flower beds; plant flowers, trees, and shrubs; water plants; remove weeds; deadhead flowers; sweep up debris; prune trees and shrubs, support other horticulture teams; and perform related duties as required.

The incumbent’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to the overall plans and direction of the planning process of the high profile and/or specialty horticultural assignments; the selection of plant material; and will be required to keep a detailed record of their designated work area. All responsibilities of the incumbent are as per the overall direction of the Horticulture Supervisor.

**Responsibilities**
- Create work plans, establish work priorities and tasks with the Horticulture Supervisor for assigned horticulture areas.
- Work with available resources to meet daily seasonal fluctuations in workload to obtain maximum efficiencies and assist in the oversight of the timely implementation of all horticulture projects.
- Oversee the training and work quality performed by the Horticulturalists, Specialized Seasonal Labourers, General Labourers and Volunteers.
- Ensure standards of performance and work quality of team members.
- Lead high profile and/or specialty horticultural assignments to meet the needs and requirements of a public garden.
- Seed, divide, propagate, and transplant plant material within both the production facilities and gardens.
- Relocate plant material as required.
- Conducting appropriate watering regimes for all plant material.
- Ongoing maintenance of all plant material by fertilizing, spacing, pinching, pruning, deadheading and staking viable plant material, while rouging non-performing material.
- Identify pest issues, threats, and mitigation controls, ensuring pest management practices are followed.
- Correctly identifying and remediating greenhouse mechanical issues including but not limited to roof inflation, poly roof repairs, injectors, hoses, wands, bench integrity, misting controls, temperature and ventilation controls and motors, doors, evaporative cooling pads, and pumps.
- Operate power equipment and hand tools associated with landscaping activities.

**Required Qualifications and Experience**
- Post-secondary education in plant science, horticulture, green space management, or a related field with the ability to demonstrate a strong knowledge of plants and garden design.
- A minimum of 5 years performing a combination of Horticulturalist work or proven gardening experience in a range of horticultural practices and procedures.
- A broad-based gardening background with experience in a range of horticultural practices and procedures. Proven abilities with creative and adaptive horticultural displays.
- Previous supervisory experience is required.
- Excellent communication skills are required to provide clear instructions, training and mentoring to horticulture team.
