Currently we are looking for a **R & D Chemist - 18 month contract**

**Job purpose**

Under supervision of R&D Manager, this position will be responsible for the support of product development of Germiphene’s infection control and preventive chemical products. The R&D Chemist will perform chemical testing of raw materials and in process/finished/stability products, execute method validation and verification and assist in technical writing and formulation.

**Duties and responsibilities**
- Assist in the Product Development Process to help increase pace of development for Class I and II medical devices, drugs and natural health products.
- Plan and perform physical and analytical testing to support product development ie. new products, stability samples and raw materials.
- Support test method development and execute method validation/verification protocols for raw materials and/or finished products
- Assist in R&D stability by preparing stability samples, writing stability protocols, create stability specifications, perform physical and analytical testing, entering data/result in software and write reports.
- Sample raw materials and packaging components for R&D lab inventory.
- Calibrate, maintain and troubleshoot lab equipment.
- Complete evaluations as outlined in protocols, product / process validations, complaint evaluations, etc.
- Performing investigations of OOS results or deviations and initiating Change Controls related to existing testing methodologies
- Clearly and effectively, write protocols, reports, and presentations using MS Office products.
- Formulate prototypes, lab batches and prepare sample requests for internal or external stakeholders.
- Coordinate the transfer/scale up of manufacturing processes for new products and reformulations from R&D to Production.
- Use standard statistical methods to determine and interpret results using Excel, Minitab, or any other statistical software.
- Assist in writing/reviewing standard operating procedures, batch records, packaging records, bill of materials, routings and product specifications for all chemical products.
- Perform weekly laboratory cleaning duties to maintain a clean working environment and reduce sample/batch contamination.
- Comply with GMP regulations, standard operating procedures, Good Laboratory Practices & Laboratory safety, and WHMIS in the R & D Analytical Laboratory, redesign of safety protocols according to WHMIS and GLP practices.
- Will follow the responsibilities as outlined in the Ontario Health and Safety Act.

**Qualifications**

**Education**:

- Post-secondary degree in Chemistry or related equivalent

**Skills/Abilities/Characteristics**:

- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Good attention to detail and Analytical thinking
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Strong chemical background and problem solving skills
- Strong knowledge of Laboratory Equipment and Procedures Testing Instrumentation - HPLC, GC, mixer, homogenizer, stability chambers, pH determination, fluoride content determination, viscometer and specific gravity
- Intermediate knowledge of MS Word and Excel
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects
- Basic knowledge of statistics Understanding of Design of Experiments (DOE)
- Basic knowledge Product or Process Validations
- Basic knowledge of cGMP and regulatory requirements (medical device and/or drugs)
- Basic knowledge of dental products or medical devices
- Follow all safety and good housekeeping procedures to maintain safe working environment.

**Experience**:

- 2-4 Years of chemistry laboratory experience in medical device, pharmaceutical, or food industry. Applicants with significant internships or a full Co-op term in an applicable field would qualify.

**Working conditions**:

- Lab environment, with Sitting and Standing for long periods of time.
- Requirement to wear various levels of Personal Protective Equipment
- Occasional exposure to manufacturing plant environment, with some abnormal variations in temperature, unavoidable fumes, noise, dust and atmospheric conditions.

**Physical requirements**:

- The ability to lift up to 50 lbs
- Visual acuity when using instruments, microscopes, etc.
