Pre-service Firefighter Laboratory Technician

The incumbent will act as a resource and provide assistance to faculty, facilitators and students of the Pre-Service Firefighter program (PFET/PFEF) program. The employee supports student learning within the PFET/PFEF program by planning and facilitating the smooth operation of the firehall and training areas used by the program. The employee ensures the operational condition of equipment and facilities by maintaining and arranging repair of equipment, ordering materials and supplies, providing technical support as required and maintaining accurate records for the program.
The employee is expected to perform duties in accordance with the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act and NFPA standards including, but not limited to, wearing/using protective equipment, devices, and/or clothing. The employee is expected to report to their supervisor any safety concerns, unsafe conditions or acts and any contraventions of the Act or regulations. This includes, but is not limited to, any defects in, or the absence of, protective devices or equipment. The employee is also expected to maintain a safe, clean, organized workspace.
- Ensure a safe, clean, and organized workspace.
- Collaborate with faculty and facilitators regarding equipment and supply needs to support learning activities and labs.
- Control all inventory to ensure practical skills requests and needs are met throughout the academic year. Organize and maintain stock and storerooms.
- Determine supply and equipment needs then research product options, obtain price quotes, and prepare purchase requisitions. Once approved, complete purchase requisitions and places orders for approved supplies and equipment.
- Act as a technical resource person regarding equipment, supplies, and learning resources. Provide assistance as required to staff and students by demonstrating operation of equipment, explaining procedures, and having knowledge of Durham College resources available if staff or students require referral.
- Ensure that equipment, and supplies are in good working condition and “set up”, ready for use prior to scheduled learning activities/labs. Acquire health and safety information as applicable and ensure current MSDS is readily available and accessible per established procedures.
- Ensure that equipment and supplies are disassembled, cleaned and maintained in a secure manner following use by program team and students.
- Responsible for the care, maintenance, repair, operation and security of equipment and supplies, including establishing preventative/required maintenance schedules, arranging for maintenance and repair of equipment in the program, and maintaining organized electronic records for tracking of equipment and PPE, including tracking of mandatory replacement dates, sizing, maintenance records etc.
- All other lab support as related to the PFET/PFEF program.
- Enforce safety procedures and report non-compliance to the Dean
**QUALIFICATIONS**:
- Minimum 1 year diploma in related discipline and relevant NFPA certifications required.
- Active firefighter with minimum of three years’ work experience as a firefighter.
- Teaching and learning in a lab environment would be beneficial.
- Critical thinking skills to support decision making and referral of issues to appropriate internal or external individuals.
- Excellent organizational skills and multitasking.
- Capable of working independently and in a group.
- Ability to be clear and concise with verbal and written communication skills.
- Experienced using MS Excel to maintain accurate inventory tracking records.
**Required Skills**:
Hourly rate: $29.59 to $36.99
Required Experience
Part-time support opportunity (classification): regular part-time.
Hours: up to 24 hours per week, scheduled Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:30 am - 8:00 pm.
