PROGRAM
Child and Youth Care Practitioner - PROGRAM Scope of Responsibilities
The Child and Youth Care Practitioner (CYCP) shall be responsible for collaborating with school teams to help implement proactive supports for children and youth who have difficulty coping in school settings due to social, emotional and/or behaviour issues. The Child and Youth Care Practitioner will provide services and supports to students with the goal of improving student success. Consistent with policies of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development and the Halifax Regional Centre for Education, the Child and Youth Care Practitioner will work within the Inclusive Education Policy framework for the delivery of specialized services to students. Working collaboratively with a team of educational professionals, families, SchoolsPlus and community agencies, the Child and Youth Care Practitioner will demonstrate a strong commitment to the school improvement process in support of student learning and reports directly to the Lead, SchoolsPlus or designate.
Competencies Required
The Child and Youth Care Practitioner shall have the following competencies:
a) The ability to establish proactive relationships with and identify appropriate interventions for vulnerable children and youth;
b) The ability to work collaboratively with administrators, classroom teachers, educational program assistants, SchoolsPlus, specialist staff, community based agencies, programs, services and supports;
f) The ability to work effectively in flexible work situations; g) The ability to utilize current technologies to support students experiencing self-regulation and
communication challenges; h) The ability to communicate effectively within the Halifax Regional Centre for Education, and
understanding, human rights and diversity; l) The desire and ability to engage in continuing education and professional development;
m) The ability to maintain and promote confidentiality.

2 JOB DESCRIPTION Qualifications
a) Completion of a post-secondary diploma or certificate such as Nova Scotia Community College: Child & Youth Care Practitioner Program diploma;
b) Minimum of two (2) years of successful experience working in an educational setting;
c) Valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle;
d) Current First Aid and CPR certification;
f) Membership in the NS Child and Youth Care Workers' Association is an asset. Specific Job Components
The Child and Youth Care Practitioner shall perform tasks as are assigned by the Lead, SchoolsPlus or designate such as Facilitator Student Services or School Principal. These tasks may vary from time to time with the evolution of the position/organization and may include, but are not limited to, the following:
a) Facilitate and support effective connections and communications between the home, school and other appropriate community agencies to meet student needs;
b) Work collaboratively with administrators, classroom teachers, educational program assistants, SchoolsPlus, specialist staff, community based agencies, programs, services and supports;
c) Assist students to develop social skills and self-regulation through community based, recreation, summer and after school programs;
d) Establish proactive relationships with and provide appropriate interventions for vulnerable children and youth, including those who demonstrate challenges with behavior, mental health or who have histories of trauma;
f) Utilize current technologies to support students experiencing self-regulation and communication challenges;
g) Support the implementation of appropriate interventions and programming for assigned students, working collaboratively with teachers, educational program assistants, administrators, specialists and others;
h) Provide support to educational program assistants who work with students with identified needs;
j) Other duties as assigned.
