**Position**: Clinical Counselor, Medical Clinic
**Wage Range**: $33.00-$39.26

**Position Summary**
The Clinical Counselor is accountable to the Operations Manager, Medical Services, and works
collaboratively within an established multi-disciplinary health care team, providing gender-affirming and
culturally sensitive counseling to patients of the Medical Clinic who are experiencing problems of an
individual, couple or family, systems or social nature.
Counselling sessions may be provided in person or virtually, enabling flexibility to work from the clinic or
remotely, in cooperation with other team members and assuming that the needs of clients are paramount
in this regard.
The counselor will be offered autonomy in practice to provide assessment, treatment planning, crisis
intervention, critical incident debriefing, conflict resolution, mediation and/or any other interventions as
appropriate to the clients’ needs. The counselor also acts as an internal consultant to other care providers
regarding available resources for patients and makes referrals to other community resources as
appropriate.
The counselor will be encouraged to participate in community outreach activities and the facilitation of
mental wellness workshops in collaboration with a peer network of allied health and other professionals
across the organization.
**Responsibilities
- Provides therapeutic, trauma-informed counseling including: assessment and direct one to one
counseling for problems such as divorce, separation, sexual abuse, depression, self-esteem,
anxiety, PTSD, death, birth of a child, and other concerns presented.
- Crisis intervention such as grief counseling, conflict resolution skills, assertiveness training, life
planning, resolving childhood abuse issues, and depression care.
- Identifies, establishes and facilitates support groups where a common need of patients can be met.
- Leads groups based on community needs using an appropriate therapeutic modality.
- Acts as internal consultant to other care providers at REACH.
- Assesses clients’ suitability for counselling at REACH or other community services and makes
appropriate referrals for individuals.
- Promotes an environment of continuous learning and professional development, which may
include supervising students in counseling and social work and, presenting relevant educational
content to other health professionals.
- Establishes and maintains relationships with community partners and service providers that can
assist in meeting the needs of patients.
- Advocates for and with clients to reduce barriers to accessing community services and programs
and works collaboratively to create additional social services in the community where needs are
not being met.
- Maintains clinical notes using EMR and correspondence within the safeguard of confidentiality.
Contributes to team and centre activities:
- Participates actively in staff meetings and board meetings.
- Participates in the overall activities of the health centre; in-service training, committees, special
events and shared staff responsibilities.
- Communicates clearly, listens accurately, is open to feedback, handles conflict appropriately, and
displays sensitivity to others.
- Collaborates well with others, promotes cooperation and teamwork.
- Participates in REACH’s commitment to becoming discrimination free and an inclusive health centre
and promotes a healthy lifestyle.
- Maintains the reputation and confidentiality of the health centre and its clients at all times.
- Adheres to all applicable REACH policies and procedures.
**Qualifications & Skills**
- Masters level in counselling psychology or related discipline and registration with a counselling or
psychotherapy association or body recognized in British Columbia and professional liability
insurance for practice in British Columbia.
- Registered member of British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC), Registered
Clinical Social Worker (RCSW), or relevant professional association (Such as CCC, RPC,MPCC, RTC
and MTC).
- Minimum three years’ experience.
- Demonstrated ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds, with complex health needs, in
a multi-cultural environment.
