Ottawa, Canada Department of Medicine Full time

**Hematologist - Transplant and Cell Therapy (TCT) Program** **Description** The Department of Medicine and the Division of Hematology at the University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital is looking for a Hematologist in our Transplant and Cell Therapy (TCT) Program. The medical staff of this FACT accredited program is composed of 7 transplant specialists, 3 ward physician and physician assistants, as well as numerous dedicated inpatient and outpatient nurses, nurse practitioner, pharmacists, dietician, physiotherapist, occupational therapist and social workers. The Ottawa Blood Disease Centre is a large group of 41 faculty that work within a group practice plan model within the University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital academic center. The Division has three well-defined and successful clinical and research programs: Malignant Hematology, Thrombosis and Benign Hematology. Within the Malignant Hematology Program, the Transplant and Cell Therapy Program (TCT) at The Ottawa Hospital acts as a referral centre for HCT for autoimmune indications in Eastern Canada. Indications include multiple sclerosis, scleroderma, and other neurologic, rheumatologic and gastroenterologic autoimmune diseases. Over the past 20 years, TCT has become a world leader in performing autologous HCT for autoimmune diseases, working closely with neurologists and rheumatologists at TOH. The Ottawa Hospital is a 1150 bed tertiary-care hospital serving Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec at four inpatient sites (Civic, General, Heart Institute, and the Rehabilitation Centre) and one ambulatory centre (Riverside). There are approximately 50,000 inpatient admissions, 160,000 emergency visits and over one million outpatient visits annually. The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) is TOH’s research arm. It ranks fourth out of more than 600 Canadian hospitals for competitive, peer-reviewed grants from the prestigious Canadian Institutes of Health Research. OHRI houses over 2,200 researchers, publishing more than 2,000 studies yearly, with hundreds being high impact publications (top 10% or citations) and places 5th overall in Canada for research funding. The Department of Medicine is a research-intensive Department. Members currently hold 28 University Research Chairs. The Department receives approximately $60 million per year in external research funding and members publish approximately 1200 peer-reviewed publications annually. The Faculty of Medicine is a nationally recognized leader, ranked among Canada’s top-tier medical faculties. The faculty ranks 3rd in Canada for research intensity in Medicine/Science (Maclean’s) and 4th in Canada for citations (2022 THE rankings). The University of Ottawa is the largest bilingual (English-French) university in the world and the first and largest bilingual medical school in Canada. The Faculty of Medicine has a long history of conducting the highest quality basic and clinical research, in close partnership with affiliated hospitals and research institutes. The Web of Science recently published a list of the most highly cited researchers in the world, where seven out of eight researchers identified from the uOttawa are from the Faculty of Medicine. Together, these remarkable achievements are a strong testament to the competitiveness and excellence of our faculty. **Responsibilities** Each year, approximately 20 to 25 patients undergo autologous HCT for an autoimmune indication annually. The TCT program sees an additional 20-25 patients with autoimmune diseases for chemotherapy or immune cell-depleting antibody therapy. The TCT program is also involved in cell therapy for other non-malignant diseases such as gene-modified autologous HCT or allogeneic HSCT for hemoglobinopathies, and performs >200 HCT and ~50 cell therapies (CAR-T Cells) annually for a range of malignant illnesses. Academically, the division of hematology supports undergraduate and postgraduate training, including subspecialty fellowship trainees in all three of our programs. Research is supported by the Division of Hematology and the University of Ottawa Department of Medicine pathways. We have active clinical trials in TCT and a strong collaboration with the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. **Qualifications** **Job Benefits** The position is part of a provincial Alternate Funding Plan (AFP), with salary and benefits that are competitive nationally.
