This program offers applicants the option to complete a supervised practice experience in one of our eight Long-Term Care Homes across the Region. By participating in this program, applicants will have an opportunity to meet the following requirements to enter practice as a Registered Nurse in Ontario:

- Evidence of Practice, or
- Evidence of Practice and Language Proficiency

Interns will complete a 140 hour **paid** placement in one of our homes. After successful completion of the internship, you will be eligible to register with the College of Nurses of Ontario. Those who have a successful internships will be eligible for Regular Employment with the Niagara Region; available positions range from Full-Time to Part-Time and include Health Care Benefits as well as Pensions for those who qualify.

**Job Summary**

The Supervised Practice Experience Partnership (the program) is a partnership program between the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), Ontario Health and CNO approved organizations.

The program offers applicants the option to complete a supervised practice experience in Ontario to demonstrate current nursing knowledge, skill and judgement and language proficiency skills. By participating in the program, applicants will have an opportunity to meet the following requirements to enter practice as a nurse:

- Evidence of Practice, or
- Evidence of Practice and Language Proficiency

Under the direction of the Director of Resident Care and in keeping with the philosophy, objectives, policies and procedures of Seniors Services, provide professional nursing care to residents/clients and offer direction and assistance to Personal Support Workers (PSWs).

**QUALIFICATIONS**

**EDUCATION AND PROGRAM REQUIREMENT**

The SPEP Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) is:

- An international trained nurse who has completed the CPRNE/REX-PN/NCLEX-RN exam with the CNO and requires a minimum 140 hour placement to complete registration OR
- An applicant who requires a restatement of their RPN license
- An approved member of the program, proof of confirmation message from the CNO will be required

Under the supervision of the Niagara Region’s Long-Term Care Homes, a SPEP Registered Nurse will receive preceptorship support to support our residents as follow:
KNOWLEDGE
- Demonstrated knowledge on nursing foundational knowledge and skills, entry-to-practice competencies College of Nurses and Jurisprudence

SKILLS
- Demonstrated strong supervisory and leadership skills
- Demonstrated strong ability to follow and implement existing evidenced based practices, CNO standards and other regulations
- Demonstrated knowledge on delegation and control acts
- Demonstrated communication skills and language proficiency
- Demonstrated interest, compassion, respect and patience in their work with cognitively impaired residents/clients and their families.
- Demonstrated flexibility and resourcefulness in achieving resident/client quality of life outcomes.
- Ability to prepare and administer prescribed, routine, medications and treatments as directed by the Physician and in accordance with the College of Nurses of Ontario’s Medication Administration Standards and Niagara Region’s Medication Management System
- Ability in conflict resolution and crisis intervention.
- Demonstrated enthusiasm, flexibility and ability to cope with change.
- Demonstrated commitment to resident/client-centred care and compassion for the resident/client population
- Ability to promote the Resident’s self-care and self-sufficiency, emphasize adaptation and abilities, promote wellness and provide preventative health education, thus by treating the whole person.
- Ability to complete all required assessments and care plans within timeframes as required
- Ability to perform CPR as required, as per College of Nurses Standard
- Performing other duties as assigned.

**Must haves**:

- Current registration in progress as a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) Certificate.
- Current Medication Administration Certificate and or evidence of Medication Administration Course or as assessed by the NNAS
- All applicants must successfully pass the prescribed Vulnerable Sector Check. Applicable to Ontario applicants
- Proof of Negative 2-Step Tuberculosis Test/Mantoux Testing or Chest X-Ray

**Shift Information**:
Interns will be scheduled following the schedule of their preceptor. Shifts may be days, afternoons, or nights working 37.5 hours per week to obtain the 140 hour requirement.
